I'm out of ideas.
I have a UM175 modem with omnidirectional antenna hooked up to a CTR500 router, with an ethernet cable running to my laptop. The router is so my wife can use another computer in a different room.
I was with Alltel until the merger with Verizon. Once the merger went through, I updated my prl, and my signal strength went from the -85 to -90 range down to the -65 to -68 range. I was ecstatic.
After some initial problems getting the router setup, everything was quite stable for a week or two.
Now, I'm seeing random massive fluctuations in performance. Last night my ping went from about 200 to 800 and stayed there for a couple hours. Intensely frustrating.
I don't know what to try. I'd like to be able to lock the modem into evdo mode, but I don't think that is an option while running the modem through the router. Heck, I can't even see if I'm in evdo mode or 1X, can I?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

CTR500
Extremely unlikely that it's infected. It's an XP machine, fresh install all the way down to flashing the BIOS about 2 months ago. Spyware scanners are run regularly. |

Some tips to narrow down the problem:
Check the Ping with the modem plugged into the computer directly, I would then drive with the modem and laptop to another part of town and check the ping on another tower.
1. I would try to eliminate the Router
2. Then the modem
3. The tower |

When your ping jumps to 200-800, are your speeds between 50-150kbps? If so then your aircard is most likely switching to the 1xRTT network.
You can prevent this by connecting your aircard directly to your computer and opening the VZAccess manager software and do the following:
1. Hold Control + D
2. Enter pass: diagvzw
3. Select "Settings"
4. Choose "HDR Only" instead of Auto.
5. Click OK
This will set your card to only connect to the EVDO [Broadband Access] network. Note: If you travel to a 1xRTT [NationalAccess] area, then you will need to change this setting back to "Auto" to be able to connect.
When you make this change, it will also be in affect when you connect your aircard to your router |

I downloaded and installed the VZAccess manager. When I hit Ctrl+D and the password, I see the following options:
Manual Activation
Mobile IP
Field Test
Debug Logging
Nothing for settings.
From reading I've done elsewhere, it looks like the UM175 can't be set to evdo only.
Just now:
875 ms ping
0.37 MB/sec down
0.13 MB/sec up |

That test was done with the modem attached to the router.
Now with the modem directly running off the laptop and connected via the VZAccess manager:
628 ms ping
0.21 MB/sec down
0.21 MB/sec up
Strange to have up and down be the same, but I ran it twice and that happened both times.
Similar results when connected through Alltel's Quicklink mobile. |

Both VZAccess and Quicklink Mobile tell me I'm connecting in Rev A mode.
Now my signal strength just magically dropped back to -83. Ping is running about 1000ms on average, with occasional 10-20 second spans of no connection at all.
I'm getting really irritated. |
