references or explanations please?

Hi. I'm enjoying reading all the posts in this section. I wonder if anyone can refer to any specific posts or other info to help explain my situation. I am in a hilly region and i am right on the edge fo a 'shadow' in my cell reception because of a mountain. I put an antenna on my roof that boosted the RSSI to the low to mid -70's (from about -100) but with my verizon UM175 I still see only National Access, and download speeds of around 150 kbps. I thought a stronger signal would allow me to get the EVDO Rev A.

Typically when i plug the unit in VZAccess tells me i have an EVDO Rev A. signal but it soon switches to National Access or National Access-extended. Often it does this as soon as i finish dialing and establish the connection.

I dont know how it might affect upload and download speeds but i have a slow ping of about 450ms, using the Ping command in the commmand window, when i ping a distant website. Pinging myself comes in at 0 ms, which is what i would expect.

I will appreciate any comments or pointers to relevant reading material. Thanks. -tom

Try locking the modem to EVDO only. See thread below for reference.
