My alltel internet speed on my tethered blackberry varies...

Well I'm connected to alltel through my blackberry pearl 8130 I don't know the significance of this but in the upper right corner of the screen it says 1XEV, anyways more to the point I'm getting really annoyed with the fact I'm not getting the speed I'm paying for I mean I've gotten speeds upto 165kb/sec right here where I'm sitting at this moment(It didn't last more than 10-20 seconds of course what with my speed bouncing from 5-160kb/sec at random) I want to know why it varies so heavily and how I can fix it because it's pissing me off to no end, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

signal signal signal... i can't stress that enough. check your signal. Don't look at your status bar on the phone. Go to OPTIONS > STATUS > and see what signal number you're getting.
