I am afraid my adapter cable for my external modem may be damaged. When I plug into my modem is does not feel firm. It is very easily removed. Is this a common problem. I have a UM175. Does it have the same connector as a USB720?

it shouldn't be loose, you can end up damaging the center pins, I had a center pin come off in a px-500 once, wasn't fun. you could push back in the outside, might help.

I would suggest a little bit of electrical tape - just wrap it around the connector and the modem to hold it in place for now.

The adapters for UM175 and U720 are not the same,

http://3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_104&products_id=694 is for the UM175

and this is the U720 cable. http://3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_104&products_id=327

One thing I have had good luck with with adapter cables is to use a small rubber band commonly found in eyeglasses repair kits on the exterior of the barrel of the connector. It fills the gap in the opening for the jack with something flexible that allows the cord to be inadvertently tugged on etc. without pulling it out.
