Security Concerns using localized SIM

Greetings,

I apologize in advance if this is the incorrect forum to post this question in and ask the admin/moderators to move as they see fit.

I have a VP that recently racked up a substantial bill using a major carriers Gobi chipset air card. I spoke with thier techical person who stated the SIM could be replaced with a local (international traverler) carriers SIM. This would establish and internet connection using the time on the purchased SIM. Once connected security would be handled though the use of VPN. Are there any additional security concerns I should be made aware of? Is this a common practice to reduce cost? Any insights provided are appreciated.
