What is very exciting (and interesting), is that Verizon is now offering a tethered modem option. This allows you to use your EVDO Phone as a modem to your laptop. Before this announcement, you were not allowed to do this.

Sounds nice.
I would love to be able to buy that phone and connect to it via Bluetooth for a wireless modem.
Problem is, Verizon disables most features of Bluetooth, about the only thing you can do with a Verizon phone with Bluetooth is use a wireless headset. |

I agree that in the past Verizon has disabled Bluetooth functionality. However, it appears that if they are advertising a tethered modem option, that the probably have Bluetooth enabled. Only problem with BlueTooth 1.0 is that it will only be able to go around 143K, even if you are in a 400K - 700K area, so using a USB cable will get you much better performance (unless BlueTooth 2.0 is in this device, anyone know?)

I called Verizon and it seems that USB is the way it needs to connect for tethered modem access and it is Windows only... Anyone find a work-around to make a happy Mac user even happier?
BTW Lost, yes it is EVDO connection. |

friends:
i could scrap my EVDO card, and SidekickII if the new blackberry will do voice and data at the same time. i don't know of any current device that does.
i like being able to send email and AIM on the Sidekick while talking, and i definitely like being online with the EVDO card and talking on my treo650!

so, basically they want to charge for using it as a modem? why should we pay to use it as a modem when you are already being charged the unlimited access fee?
in short, you will have to pay them $15 a month to not be harassed. |

The unlimited plan on a pda with voice is 44.99 (plus whatever voice plan you have). The unlimited plan on a laptop with a pc-card modem is 59.99 if you are also a voice customer, and 79.99 if you are a data only customer.
Now that you can USB tether the blackberry, the logic is that you need to pay the same price for the unlimited data as if you were using an aircard. It would be nice if Verizon simplified all of this and simply lowered the price for PDA's and Aircards to 44.99, but I seriously doubt that will happen since they just recently started offering the 59.99 unlimited pc card plan (down from 79.99).
Competition will drive the price down over time.
Also, I have to imagine that bluetooth tether is not being offered due to the fact that it would SIGNIFICANTLY degrade the data througput performance on EVDO. |
