as mentioned earlier in thread, verizon already has 10.6 compatible connection managers, and we'll be publishing our findings of testing sprint/verizon evdo devices with a clean install of 10.6 next week.
check out sprint/verizon coverage over you area, here:

|
|
There are two issues with the A600 that I've identified: 1) The installer expects a version of 10.5 and doesn't handle 10.6 gracefully; 2) The device doesn't get added to Network Preferences.
If issue #1 is fixed, but #2 isn't done how the Connection Manager expects, you will see the Connection Manager finding the device, but won't list Cricket Broadband as a provider.
For issue #1, I'll post an updated installer script that will at least handle 10.6 properly. I'm only updating the part that checks the version number and leaving the rest of their bugs in.
For issue #2, in a previous post, I had instructions on adding the device to the Network Preferences. It looks like the magic step is to rename the "Cal-comp CDMA USB Modem A600" device to "Cricket Broadband".
I hope to have a screencast created and posted to someplace like youtube this afternoon.
Alex, you may consider adding Cricket to your broadband offerings or at least join their affiliate program. I've been pretty happy with it so far. It's limited in coverage, support isn't as good as Sprint/Verizon, but it's $40/month with no contract with a free modem after rebate. |

Hi, thanks so much for the screencast and script. However, when I try to run the script as indicated, I get the following error:
postflight: line 1: {rtf1ansiansicpg1252cocoartf1038: command not found
postflight: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `}'
postflight: line 2: `{\fonttbl\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Helvetica;}'
Is there an updated script?
Thanks again. |

It looks like you copied it into TextEdit and then saved it as a RTF document. In safari, alt-click the link to save it to disk. You can also try "Make Plain Text" in TextEdit. |

ok, third time worked, I think - the device was recognized. I now have to find out what my password is.
Thanks the script - and your assistance! I really appreciate it! |

I've had an interesting experience with my Verizon/Novatel USB760 stick and SL. Sometime back when using Leopard, I lost the little WWAN indicator bars in my menu. They had been there ever since I first installed the stick, replacing my Express slot card when using Tiger [if memory serves]. No big deal; I could open up the Network Preferences pane, and hit the connect button from there, and all was fine.
With SL, however, the "Connect" button for the Novatel modem was grayed out in the Network Preferences pane. I had not fired up VZAM since I first set up the 760, but I started it, and was able to connect with the net. No problem.
I read somewhere else that plugging a Verizon USB stick into a new SL machine worked great; the Mac would automatically find the necessary drivers, install the little WWAN menubar icon, etc. According to the post I read, SL upgraders needed to remove all traces of VZAM from their system before upgrading SL and all would be well. I am on the road right now, so reinstalling SL is not something to try. Still, I did remove all traces of VZAM, rebooted my MBP, and then plugged the stick in, but no love from the system.
So, I went to the Verizon site [using wi-fi here at my hotel], downloaded the latest 4.3.2, and installed it with no problem. WHen I fired it up, it cycled me through the activation process all over again. But no problem. Everything worked, but still no WWAN menubar icon.
Any hope of getting the WWAN menubar icon back and working? VZAM works, but it really is pretty butt-ugly. |

|
|
I just upgraded my aluminum MacBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard. When I tried my Sierra 597 modem with SprintView software (it was the latest version from Sprint's site), I got errors that the drivers were incorrect and could not run.
After reading the notes here in the forum, patrickst1 and Patrick_13 indicated a reload to old drivers worked. I didn't have them, so I tried the following which worked:
1) Remove the USB modem
2) Drag the SprintView app to the trash and empty it
3) Restart the MacBook
4) Plug in the USB modem
5) The signal strength bars should appear on the top right status bar
6) If you right click on it and open Network Preferences, you should see that the modem has already connected itself (assuming you had set it up before the Snow Leopard update)
7) Everything JUST WORKED!
I was impressed that Snow Leopard recognized the modem automatically without prompting and connected. Don't even need the SprintView software. I love my Mac! |

what a great report. Thanks for doing all this work. Question: I would put an archive & install in between a fresh install and an upgrade. Any thought on whether an archive & install would do the trick? I would think you would still need to delete (in my case) all VZAM files. |

we explain in the article, anyone considering any kind of upgrade to snow leopard should uninstall their carrier software first.
both verizon vzam and sprint smartview have nice way to 'uninstall'.
for vzam, launch the app and look for 'uninstall' under file menu.
for smartview, look for the uninstaller in same folder as the app. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

Excellent. Never had a need for that; glad it's there. |
