We have sprint 3g for just over 2 years. I haven't been really paying attention to the 5gb cap story until I accidentally came across the discussion today while researching for a piggy tail for my friend's Alltel USB 3G modem.

I got panic and I read the cap date as *7/13/2009* (actually it was 7/13/2008). Dug into my bills and still shows the flat unlimited monthly plan. Logged into mysprint.com, and it still says unlimited.

I have a home network of several computers. All of us sharing this single connection. Kids watch youtube and play computer games. Wife is in school with internet class. I'm fixing customers' computers at home so I've to download patch/drivers updates after rebuilding or repairing a PC. Our usage is pretty heavy.

Our average usage is about 15-16gb/month. Definitely above the 5gb cap. So far, no additional charge or letter or phone calls from sprint. While I was puzzling into this, I finally realized that I read the date wrong. It was more than a year ago !

Well, it seems like it has not affected me yet as many here say Sprint seems to be after those signed up after 11/2008 or really using lots of lots of bandwidth.

But if they terminate me, I will be going to the prepaid data card. Glad that I don't have to pay ETF since the two years contract is over.

Don't get to comfy. I have been on an "unlimited" plan since September '06. I just got a letter this month giving me a warning about the cap. When I called Sprint CS, I was told that it didn't matter when you got your account, they are now enforcing 5gb/mo for everyone.

I have not gotten the letter but if I do I'll just cancel it. I only bought it because I was told it would stay unlimited.

I'd rather pay $200 to get out of the contract than accidentally run $300 over my limit, which would only be like 1.5 GB.

If you read this thread:

http://www.evdoforums.com/thread11822.html

You'll see what Sprint is doing, there is even a copy of the letter you'll get if Sprint takes action against you. The customer states he used about 20 gigs a month. They sent him a letter, stating they would be cancelling his service, no early termination fee, they even gave him 30 days notice so he would have time to find another provider. So, if you want out of your contract, and you have the older "unlimited" service, there you go. It's only if you have the newer capped accounts where you have to worry about overage charges.

The thread entitled "If You Exceeded the 5 Cap, Share Sprint's Response" has been on Buzz About Wireless, http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/4385 , and a sticky in this forum. So few have been terminated or received letters the threads are relatively inactive.

Basically those who signed up beginning in 11/08 are getting overage charges, but those with contracts prior don't seem to be hearing from Sprint unless their usage is regularly in excess of 15 GB.

Sprint seems very tolerant of routine overages below 10 GB like mine, below.
