Okay, to my understanding there are three TOS for EVDO and the "unlimited" terminology. The first being that your service is truly unlimited, and that you will never be throttled or cut off due to usage. The second being "unlimited", but you are throttled after 5GB at Verizon's leisure. The third, 5GB and once you go over that, billed per your usage over that limit as outlines by their overage prices.
I signed up for my aircard service in December of 2007, and it appears that Verizon has been throttling me when I go over the 5GB in two consecutive months. I was under the impression that I was under the original terms of service where I would not be throttled, and that the 5GB throttling policy came into effect later down the road for other customers, and obviously the 5GB with overage costs policy came in the most recent.
Is there something that I'm missing? I see people around here pulling 20GB+ a month and saying that they're not getting throttled. Just wanted some clarification as to why I am all of a sudden. |

its my understanding that even when people though there was truly unlimited, there was always the possibility verizon was going to throttle you and there was argument/discussion about what the 'magic number' was that triggered it.
i think the reality is that throttling will only occur if someone else on the tower(s) you use, complains often enough that verizon has to do something about it.
the guys getting away with whatever high GB/mo, are just lucky enough to be on a tower that nobody is complaining about, or are mobile so they are spreading the consumption across multiple towers and never being identified as a specific reason for someone else's complaints.
i'm not saying i KNOW this to be fact. its my educated guess. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

That was somewhat my understanding as well. I first started getting throttled a couple of months ago when I was using my Verizon card to do some uploading via FTP to my server since my DSL line is pretty slow on upload. I rarely use the Verizon card unless I'm away from home for an extended period of time, hotel with connectivity you have to pay for, etc, which is why I thought it would never happen because I'm light most months, and then can get in the 20GB range if I'm away for a week or so with it. However, I noticed when I was in a much larger area (namely, Minneapolis, MN) for a week, I racked up a lot of usage, and then later found out that I was throttled for the rest of my billing cycle for all the usage that I had accumulated up there. So it appears that, if nothing else, it's not entirely based on the location. That was actually my argument to them in general...how can you throttle based on usage that is spread across a variety of different towers while traveling. Their response was just that it was reducing the quality of "the network" itself, which is kind of bull if it's across multiple towers. Utilizing the speed of an entire T1 on one tower isn't going to affect that of another tower down the road, nor is it affecting their entire backbone by racking up usage on multiple towers while traveling (while in the backseat of a car on a road trip, for example).
What few times I've called in to complain about getting throttled down to 20KB/sec both direction speeds, the "High Usage Department" that they transfer me to says that it's all up to one guy that works at Verizon in that department, and he's the one that throttles accounts. I find that extremely hard to believe, but a few different reps have told me that. Good thing they didn't tell me his name
Just my rant/insight on the situation. |
