I'm on an iPhone with unlimited data plan. AT&T caps podcast downloads via 3g to 10MB. I wonder if I can start the download on WiFi via MiFi and then pause it and switch to 3g. Hum..... |
I would stick with the iphone's unlimited plan. The handsets aren't subject to a cap. I wish I had gotten the iphone rather than this stupid Samsung Propel. It's a nice phone, but it isn't as good as a computer replacement that the iphone is. I'd like to be able to download free audio (podcasts) with my phone, then plug the phone into my truck's sound system. All i can do with this propel subscribe to Napster for $8.99 a month. |

| I got the Sprint MiFi because I get very little to no 3g (AT&T) in San Francisco on my iPhone. With the Sprint, I get data service even when I am underground train ride (BART) all the way from home to work. |

I had to extend my contract when I needed a new device, I couldn't afford to just buy it outright. Signing a contract and activating the new device didnt affect my plan though. |

| I hit the cap quite often. On a grandfathered verizon account and get dropped down to 25kb/s every month. This month I actually did not download much of anything after it recycled, and 7 days later I got hit with the threshold again. I guess video streaming eats up a lot. |

I hit it rarely, usually when Ubuntu has a new release or something.
But if you are in an area where Cricket has coverage,
http://www.mycricket.com/cricketcoveragemaps/
they have a really good deal. $40/mo no contract, first month free, with $75 A600 evdo modem (which works with the latest cradlepoint firmware). They throttle at 5Gb. I'm grandfathered into the Verizon plan, but just went over (a rude coworker may have been loading his iPod, or something else), so I have this as an auxillary. Also IT INCLUDES UNLIMITED TEXTING! I was going to consider an AT&T prepay $20/mo texting - and I may eventually get it for coverage, but for $40, I get 5Gb throttled, not turns into a $$$ bill and texting. |

| I use 40GB+ per month including p2p, streaming video, etc. on *each* of my USB720 cards (grandfathered - have never been throttled). I've actually been looking to dump one of my two grandfathered accounts and just combine my use on the one, but I'm hesitant to kill off such a valuable grandfathering. If anyone is willing to pay me a premium to switch the account over to their name and thereby keep the grandfathered status, PM me... would do it for the right price. |

I topped 40 GB for the first time this billing cycle...been with Verizon for several years now...service keeps getting better all the time but still has issues from time to time...I guess nobodys perfect...other than satellite its the only option other than dial up...buried utilities in my neighborhood keeps cable out. |

Thanks to everyone for sharing their usage info in this thread - this is very helpful info for folks looking into mobile broadband!
One request: For those of you sharing your usage info, please make sure you're also giving us an idea of what you're doing to use the data - for example, are you using 15GB per month because you download movies from iTunes? Do you stream live games from MLB? Does your teenager watch YouTube videos 5 hours a night?
Some users are not very familiar with how much data common internet activity "uses up" and not everyone's use is going to be the same. While Person A uses 40GB a month downloading movies 4 hours a day, Person B might be online 24 hours a day but only use 4GB because all he does is email and read news.
Don't forget that you can also get a general idea of how much data common internet activities use in this chart: What Does 5GB Get Me? |

| you can easily see your usage by logging in to your account. I'm not streaming much of anything, and have rarely used more than 3gb in the three months I've had the mifi2200. I do upload photos from time to time and do look at tv online when I'm traveling; email, web browsing.. reading the news online...that's about the extent of my use. |

It's close to twice as much as 5 GB, and I hope you have an older unlimited plan or that bill must have been a nasty one.

Thanks for your help. Would I be using my usage amount if I am idling?? I have my Aircard activated 24/7 on Cradlepoint router. |

The only time a service provider shows a change in usage is if data is being transferred over their network. A card plugged into a Cradlepoint router 24/7 with no computers attached to it is going to show very little if any usage at all. In most cases usage that is adding up overnight or when the network appears to be idle stems from updates. When I say updates I refer to Windows updates, antivirus updates, and some other software manufacturers have programs that search for and download updates as well. A lot of times setting these actions to manual or changing the scheduling of them will curb a lot of random usage. I would prefer my antivirus program personally to check for updates 3 times a week or so as opposed to every fifteen minutes; my browsing habits don't generally put me at risk that often.
Another thing that might be eating up bandwidth is adware and spyware, some of the garbage out there can literally bring a machine to a screeching halt with it's constant 'phoning home' to report browsing habits or whatever other nefarious purpose the software was written for. While the usage is nominal in most cases it can certainly lay a mobile broadband connection's performance low.
Lastly I and I think this has been covered in detail previously, p2p and file sharing programs can certainly impact your usage. If possible try using software that has some sort of throttling method and learn to use this feature, it can literally save you a fortune in the long run. _________________ BITF, PITM |
