<< First Sierra Wireless devices pass certification in advance of Windows 7 launch, paving the way for a better mobile broadband customer experience >>
VANCOUVER, Aug. 11 - Sierra Wireless today announced a milestone in the company's efforts to simplify the way customers connect with mobile broadband networks. The Sierra Wireless AirCard(R) 402 2-in-1 data card, Compass 885 and USB 598 modems, and MC5728 and MC5728V embedded modules have passed Microsoft Corp. certification tests for compatibility and reliability with Windows 7 mobile broadband and can officially be designated "Compatible with Windows 7." Testing of other devices in the Sierra Wireless product portfolio is underway and complete Windows 7 compatibility information will be updated regularly at www.sierrawireless.com/windows7.
Windows 7 mobile broadband is the result of years of in-depth listening to customers and their desire for faster, easier access to mobile broadband networks. The resulting functionality enables customers to open a mobile broadband network connection through the "View Available Networks" menu - the same interface they are accustomed to using for their WiFi and VPN connections.
The Compass 885 with Windows 7 mobile broadband support was first demonstrated at Windows Hardware Engineering Conference 2008 and has been showcased to PC OEMs, enterprises and operators around the world. Windows 7 users can plug in a Sierra Wireless Compass 885 or an AT&T USBConnect Mercury and Windows Update will download the necessary software to upgrade to the Windows 7 mobile broadband experience. Sierra Wireless plans to replicate this model for all logo-approved devices in the field, and expects to apply a similar model for devices only able to support traditional Windows 7 connection managers, including Sierra Wireless Watcher(TM). "The Windows 7 logo is a key initiative for Sierra Wireless, because we understand how important it will be to our customers," said Jim Kirkpatrick, chief technology officer for Sierra Wireless. "Integration with Windows 7 mobile broadband provides customers with a simple mobile broadband connection experience integrated with their other networking alternatives. It's the culmination of a great deal of effort on the part of both the Microsoft and the Sierra Wireless teams, who share a commitment to making everyday mobile computing tasks faster and easier." |
