Verizon Wireless asks federal court to thwart AT&T, say 'most reliable network' ads are true

NEW YORK (AP) -- Verizon Wireless asked a federal court Monday to rule that claims it makes in advertisements, including its position as "America's most reliable 3G network," are truthful and accurate.

Verizon Wireless is striking back at AT&T Inc., which challenged Verizon's advertising with the National Advertising Division of the Council for Better Business Bureaus on July 1. AT&T said Verizon's claims that it runs the best and most reliable third-generation wireless networks are false and unproven.

In filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Verizon Wireless said AT&T's challenge with the NAD "invented a new formula for calculating 'reliability' and claims that by applying this newly concocted formula its 3G wireless network has superior 'reliability.'"

Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC of the U.K., said speed and reliability are two distinct matters.

Michael Coe, a spokesman for Dallas-based AT&T, called Verizon's claim that speed is not a relevant factor "preposterous."

"Data network speed is an essential factor to consumers when it comes to data transmission on their wireless devices," Coe said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless asked the court to declare its advertising claims are truthful, accurate and substantiated, and to award it costs and attorney's fees from AT&T.

Personally reliability refers to up-time. Therefore the most reliable 3G network would be the network with the most saturation and up-time.

up-time as a measure of network performance would be fine IF it didn't includ the 3G claim. 3G implies a high-speed network and so requires more than just up-time to be considered satisfactory. A 3G network operating at CDMA speeds is not reliable at all, its not even a 3G network at all at that point other than hardware being used. From the consumer side, sub 1.2 mbps is not a 3G network, its a slug.

I'm sorry I should have elaborated. I agree with you, to me reliability in this case refers to having the most 3G network deployment while being able to maintain consistently high (3G) speeds.

The problem is that in my opinion none of the carriers are completely built meaning that the US is fully covered.

Its been said here a hundred times "which is the best network?" And the answer is who provides the best coverage in your area? Maybe one is superior in one spot as opposed to another. It depends on each individuals case.
