Hello!
I did some searching on the forum already, and looks like a few have had similar problems, although I don't see exactly my issue.
First off, let me start by saying that my ONLY internet connection is my Verizon account, and since it isn't working (again) this is done via memory from work. I also don't get good cell service in my area (t-mobile) so calling customer service is a pain. I can't be in the same room as the computer when calling.
I've had the Verizon service for about 6 months now. I was given a UM175. I use this on a desktop PC usually. Running Windows 2000 (just reinstalled yesterday because of this issue). The computer itself is newly built within 6 months as well, if hardware is thought to be an issue.
I do live out in the middle of nowhere, but of course Verizon said I would have service in my area, and their coverage map also reflected that I would. I expected it to be at least spotty. And no, I can't get cable or DSL at my location.
Initially I was having problems connecting. Talked with Verizon, they had me reset the UM175 (apparently) and it somewhat worked. At the time authentication might have cropped up as a problem once in awhile, but multiple attempts would normally connect. But that was an authentication problem. What's developed isn't as obvious to me.
I turn the computer on, open VZaccess manager, see one or two bars of signal strength, and "not connected". I click connect, it says dialing, and then immediately reverts to "device not connected", indicating that the UM175 has been removed. It has not of course. Even after saying device not inserted, it still shows signal strength. The "blue" LED also flashes as though everything is normal. I am using the Y-cable to get it high enough to get fairly consistent signal strength. I can no longer connect at all. Tried up until 11PM last night.
Have reinstalled VZaccess manager multiple times, and have even checked/removed anything in the registry that remained of the old installs, that I could find before reinstalling. I try "activate" in access manager, and typically it says activation failed. The wizard usually works, although sometimes says device not inserted, when it hasn't moved.
I do have a laptop. Laptop is running same OS. Laptop seems to work fine when the desktop doesn't. To be honest I haven't tried it with the antenna located in the exact same location as the desktop, nor recently. If I use the laptop on the road, which I did Saturday, I have no issues.
The odd thing for the desktop is that with minimal OS patches/fixes installed, internet access seemed fine. It takes a lot of time to uninstall the MS fixes, but I have been steadily doing that to see if it actually does isolate to one patch/fix that MS says is required. A few of the "fixes" usually freeze up and require multiple attempts to install correctly.
I did try connecting without the access manager, and initially it worked great. I was seeing speeds almost double what I got with access manager, but now that connection says "vzaccess manager not found" when I click connect.
Prior to this reinstall, when trying to connect via access manager, it would hang indefinitely on authentication (I could leave it for an hour) or it would connect and immediately go dormant, with no data transfer possible. If it was showing connected but dormant, I could click disconnect and it would hang at disconnecting forever as well.
I know I threw a lot out here, but I'm hoping that maybe someone can put the pieces together that I'm missing.
I'm fairly certain it's not the OS since the laptop works. But that's about all I'm even somewhat certain on, and I don't even really trust that, thus my backing off the updates to see if it resolves the issue.
I had a fleeting thought that it might be a USB port issue, but I can hook the modem up to a hub with a hard drive, and the hard drive never goes down, so I don't think that's it.
Does anyone have any idea? I appreciate any! |

When you are connected, what is the RSSI (signal strength) when you put your mouse pointer over the signal bars at the bottom? _________________ evdo-tips.com

OK!
Sitting at home, and for now it's working.
Without connecting, I didn't get any reading from the signal bars at the bottom...the top ones (in the "network" window I suppose) were showing a bar or two, but nothing at the bottom. Not sure if normal or not, but just including that in case.
Once connected, not using the internet, the signal changed from about -94 to -113, pretty much bouncing all over in between.
Now, broadband access (Rev-A) is showing, no bars, -110. Two bars it went to -95.
Prior, I was connected with "NationalAccess" and I know it bounces between pretty often.
I'm assuming a higher number=worse? Best data transfer speed I've seen yet is 30kb/sec (without using vz access), averagel high is 15 through vz access, usually around 10. |

Access the diagnostic mode of the VZAccess Manager software by pressing CTRL-D and entering the password diagvzw. You need to be disconnected first.. Click on the "Settings" tab and select "HDR only". Click Ok, wait, and reconnect.

Jim, thanks.
I did as you suggested, seems my connection is more stable. Got kicked off a few times initially, then it stayed stable all night while it downloaded updates and what not.
I'll update if further problems arise.
Thanks again! |
