Side Trip: SSD module in a ThinkPad x61

There's some controversy and speculation on the net as to whether the open WWAN Mini-PCIe socket in ThinkPads (see? There's a reason I'm posting this here :-) can be used instead for an SSD boot drive, using the SuperTalent or other similar SSD modules.

Nope.

On my X61, there were two problems:

The module is about 15mm too long to the mounting screw holes, so there's no way to screw it down. But worse:

If your laptop didn't ship with the WWAN module, Lenovo *didn't fit the socket*; the solder pads are just laying there on the motherboard, staring up at you insolently.

So if you wanted to do this, don't. :-)
