Hello,
I would like to use Wifi to share my new Netbook computer with my Verizon EVDO service. Unfortunately, it didin't come with built-in 3G. I need to set up an Ad Hoc network. I have a USB adapter on the mainh, desktopp, computer which is running XP Home, and built-n Wifi from the Netbook, also running XP Home, both machnes are service pack 3.
Can someone please advise me on how to set this up, or point me toward a good FAQ, etc? Feel free to write to me off the boards if needed.
I know a 3G router would be the easiest, but I just cannot afford one.
Thanks.

Go to the properties of the wireless card and click on the share box for your verizon card. Get a wireless router and plug that computer into the router using ports 1-4, not the one that says WAN, make sure you go into the settings of the router and disable the DHCP, at this point it acts like a switch.
At this point the laptop should connect and surf just fine.
On a side note, make sure you set your security up on the wireless router before you turn off the DHCP, once you turn it off you have to "hard reset" the router to get back into the control panel..........good luck. |

Hi,
Thanks for replying to my message.
Unfortunately, I won't be getting a wireless router on a small fixed income, I simply cannot afford one, unless someone knows where i might get an extremely cheap model, and I have a feeling that anything that cheap won't be worth even a low price.
Does anyone know how to do this Ad Hoc?

Yeah if you don't mind fiddling with your network settings a bit.
1) Make sure VZAccess manager is *not* configured to manipulate your wi-fi connection. It asks whether to do this when installing... I don't know if there is a way to undo that. Poke around in preferences.
2) Make your way to "Network Connections". In XP it's in the Control Panel. In Vista you have to go to the Network & Sharing center, then click "Network Connections" on the left-hand column.
3) Right-click your BroadbandAccess dial-up connection and go to properties. Ignore Verizon's warning and click "advanced".
4) Go to the sharing tab. Turn sharing on. If there is a dropdown for another adapter, choose your wireless adapter here. Make sure the box that says "Automatically connect when another user on the network wants a connection" (something like that) is not checked. Click ok a bunch of times.
5) Right-click your wireless adapter, go to properties, edit the TCP/IP v4 settings:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Leave everything else blank.
6) Setup a new wireless ad-hoc network
7) Go to your netbook and also go to "network connections" (see step 2). This time right-click your wireless adapter, edit the TCP/IP v4 settings to this:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS server primary: 192.168.0.1
DNS server secondary: (blank)
On the netbook, connect to the ad-hoc network created by the first machine.
This is how we have it setup at my house. I've done this loads of times in different configurations (wired, wireless, never with an ad-hoc network but the principal should work), operating systems, etc.
If you run into trouble, try rebooting the machines, disabling firewalls, etc.
Worth noting is that neither machine's wireless will work at friend's homes, internet cafes, hotspots, etc. To reset each machine, go back to "Network connections" and set the wireless adapter's TCP/IP v4 values to "obtain automatically". |
