Verizon's announcement can be found here:

http://support.vzw.com/information/smtp_shutdown.html

While many options exist, we recommend gmail's free webmail service to all mobile broadband users.

More info about setting up gmail for SMTP/outbound mail can be found here:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13287

Customers who obtained mobile broadband service through 3gstore.com can request our 'Gmail Tipsheet' by emailing support@ 3gstore.com

Uh - - this is way more technical than I can understand.

Now I have a Verizon USB727. I use the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client to hook into my AOL e-mail account. (imap.aol.com)
smtp.aol.com is my outgoing e-mail server setting.

Does this announcement mean that won't work any more after August?

you'll be fine because you aren't using Verizon's smtp service.

From what I remember, when I was sending e-mail via a mail client on the Verizon network I was only allowed to use smtp.vzwmail.net as the outgoing server. However, I have a family member that has Gmail that has their e-mail setup through Outlook, so I guess I need to get them changed off the smtp.vzwmail.net setting. Will the outgoing Gmail server work fine without any Verizon authentication?

Since receiving my Verizon "shutdown" letter yesterday, I checked out the outgoing SMTP Gmail function and it works fine.
Verizon wouldn't have anything to do with Outlook mail settings after Aug. 29.

Guess I need to get off my lazy butt and get T-bird set up to work with my Yahoo POP acct.
