About 30 minutes after setting up my CTR500 the signal strength under the Modem tab suddenly said "Not Available"

I was having issues with the UM175 that you can read about here:
http://www.evdoforums.com/thread12153.html

Got the replacement UM175 back and still no readings on signal strength...any ideas

CP products are unable to get a signal strength measurement from the UM175 while it is online because CP's firmware only knows how to do so using Hayes AT commands, and using a Hayes AT command on the UM175 disconnects you from the network. The VZ access manager uses some other method to get signal strength from the UM175. I believe CP cannot use that method because they aren't Verizon and so Pantech won't sell them a license to the API for the device, and CP haven't been able to reverse-engineer it yet.

So you can only see RSSI on the webui right after the device is first plugged in.
