i apologize, but searching for Compass 597 AND 1XRTT didnt seem to give any definite answers regarding the problem ive had.

lately, ive been having some issues with my Compass 597 modem. current setup is External antenna > Modem > powered USB hub > Computer. under most circumstances its fine, -80 to -90 signal, acceptable ping in most everything I do online (World of Warcraft... and... uhh... WoW). however, lately ive been having problems with SmartView suddenly dropping the EVDO connection to an 1XRTT connection with next to no data transfer at all. before when this would happen it would bounce back and forth between the 2 connection types. i seem to have fixed this by getting a much larger piece of metal for a grounding plane. however, now it will not switch back to the EVDO connection, unless I pull my modem out of the USB port. and even then a lot of the times it will just stay flashing red on the modem's signal indicator and hover at -125 signal strength. if I pull the antenna out of the modem, it seems to be able to pick up a -110 signal, enough for it to connect out. however the speed i get and the latency i have in WoW is terrible, usually 3-5 seconds of lag time between "saying" something and it actually popping up on the screen. if i had a second antenna i'd try it, but sadly i dont.

summary: modem works, occasionally drops to 1XRTT, requiring modem to be pulled from USB hub. lately thats not enough and will still stay on 1XRTT network for an extended period of time. Antenna might be problem, it might not. removing antenna will sometimes allow connection to EVDO, other times it stays on 1XRTT.

any additional information feel free to ask for, i'll post it as best i can
