I have heard good reports about people using Ubuntu jaunty 9.xx, some report their modem was recognized when plugged in. It could be worth upgrading. For more help look here: http://ubuntuforums.org

all right, well it said something like it was pending moderator approval, not 'lost forever'. i would've expected it to be approved by now. anyway, the guide i followed was at www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/downloads/Sprint_Mobile_Broadband_Setup_Guide.pdf and basically i just ignored the steps 1-4. i also used GNOME PPP instead of KPPP which saved hundreds of MB since ubuntu uses gnome. if using kubuntu then stick with KPPP.
