When I got my MiFi I noticed the new phone number assigned to my Verizon Account. I sent a text message to the phone number from my phone.

Using the VZAccess software I noticed that the text message arrived and I could see it when I was tethered to my laptop via the USB cable.
In the VZAccess software I could read the message and respond.
This got me to thinking if it were possible to get these text messages delivered to you when you were using the WiFi...
If you could then I could use Skype for my phone and I could use some other product to deliver my text messages.
I would no longer need my cell phone.

Anyone got any ideas of how you can receive a text message to the MiFi Verizon assigned phone number and get it delivered to a device (like the ipod touch or some other wifi connected device) that is attached to the Wifi side of the device?

Currently, not possible.

You need to be running VZAM (only on Windows - does not work on Mac) to recevie/send text messages.

When you are hooked up via WiFi (to the MiFi), you are no longer running VZAM.

It would be a pretty cool feature to add text messaging to the Admin interface.

Since the sprint mifi doesn't hve any software, do they also assign a phone number and is there a way to receive text messages while tethered? Anyone know?

The MiFi has software build into it, so when you plug it in it'll auto load (M$ Windows) the drivers & Sprint Smartview software.
This is also how the dedicated COM port enabled GPS works.

As for text, not sure how that plays out but your MiFi does have a phone #, according to the account.

Verizon customers are charged for receiving text messages sent to MiFi or other USB-based wireless internet devices, even though the devices lack a screen with which to view the messages. Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, a law firm based in Seattle, has filed a lawsuit against Verizon on this issue and wants to hear from consumers who have used the MiFi and been charged for spam or other unwanted text messages.
