Official press release is at: http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/2782/64/

Quote:
Mobile Broadband Connect lets customers use their handsets as modems. Beginning Sunday, Verizon Wireless customers can add Mobile Broadband Connect for $49.99 with any qualifying voice plan. Other Mobile Broadband options include:

  • $15 with a Nationwide Email Plan

  • $30 with a $29.99 or greater data plan or feature

Each option gives customers 5 GB of data usage, and the overage charge will change from 25 cents to 5 cents per MB over the allowance.

we're not sure that EXISTING customers will automatically see the lower tethering charges.

we're working as hard as we can to find out for sure, and will post update here once we know.

UPDATE: Existing tethering customers will NOT automatically see the lower rates and lower overage charges. However, since tethering is not a contracted service and there is no penalty for canceling, all you have to do to take advantage of the new pricing/overages is to call Verizon and turn off tethering and then call them back and turn it back on (on or after Sunday, when these new plans go into effect).

The way this press release is worded is a tad confusing, so allow me to clarify the costs of tethering with Verizon. They have three different rates: 1 for customers tethering a regular (non-PDA) phone, 1 for PDA users who are signed up for the $29.99/mo PDA package, and a third for PDA users who are signed up for the $44.99/mo PDA package. While the overage charges for ALL tethering customers is dropping on Sunday, ONLY THE FEE FOR TETHERING REGULAR PHONES IS CHANGING - the fees for PDA users is still the same:

Verizon tethering fees effective Sunday 5/17/09:
Regular (non-PDA) phones: $49.99/mo (previously $59.99)
PDA users with $29.99 PDA package: $30/mo (same as before)
PDA users with $44.95 PDA package: $15/mo (same as before)

Thanks, Maureen. I was able to have the feature cost reduced to the new rate just by calling VZW customer service today (now that the new rates are in effect and shown on the VZW website) and asking the rep about the new lower costs. She put me on hold for less than a minute and came back to say she'd corrected my account to the new rates (which of course I'll confirm on my next bill).

What's the tethering charge for the 64.99/69.99 Global plan?
