Even at $.05 per meg, the overage fees are still crazy high.
On the $59.99 plan, the first 5 GB are effectively priced at $.0117 per megabyte if you use exactly 5 GB during the billing cycle.
At the $.05 per megabyte rate, you're paying roughly $51.20 per gigabyte in overage fees.
Verizon sells you the first 5GB /month at $59.99, but use another 5GB in that billing cycle, and they'll tack on another $256.00 to your bill.

| UPDATE: The new lower overage charges will NOT automatically apply to existing contracted customers. If you are currently in a 2-year contract and exceed your 5GB limit even after this policy goes into effect, you will still be charged the old 25 cents/MB. You CAN, however, call Verizon on or after Sunday (when these new plans go into effect) and ask them to put you on this new plan ---- we cannot guarantee that they will allow this, but it's certainly worth a try. |

I see in the press release that the price for the Mobile Broadband Connect feature for handsets will be lower, $49.99 down from $59.99 for 5 GB. Is there any word on whether this lower cost will automatically take effect for those with the feature currently enabled and whether it will prorate in the current billing cycle?

Hi Michelle,
Take a look at this forum thread for more info on the tethering fee.
Unfortunately, Verizon will not automatically switch your plan - however, since tethering is not a contracted service and there is no penalty for canceling, what you can do is simply call Verizon and turn tethering off, then call back and turn it back on and you'll have the new rate |

I am in a two year plan, w/Blackberry data + tethering. When I called, the Verizon rep switched me to the new terms with no problem. |

Does Verizon offer a month-to-month Mobile Broadband plan for laptops?
The release above suggests so, but I sure can't find anything on the Verizon website that says so. The only offering I can find for "native" laptop access with a wireless card/modem requires a contract.
Please tell me I'm wrong! |

Wow . . . thanks for that information. You made my day!
I called Verizon just a few weeks ago and was told I'd have to sign up for a 2 year contract if I wanted "native" laptop access.
After reading your post, I called again obviously got a more informed customer service rep and learned that IF you pay full retail for the aircard/modem you can turn it on and off by the month.
Whoppee! No more need to tether to avoid an extra contract, plus I can use my phone again while on the internet.
You have to pay for the full month (with tethering you only have to pay for the time you use it), but it's sure better than having to sign a 2 yr. contract!
Thanks again . . . |

I was curious about a month to month plan and looked into it myself. On their site these are the plans listed.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=plans
I followed this up by calling Verizon this morning after finding no mention of it on their site under the guise of a musician going on tour for a few months and got this information.
In order for you to get a month to month plan you would need to either already have a compatible mobile broadband card or purchase one through them at full price. Once that is done you literally would purchase service in monthly blocks for the same price as you would pay with a two year contract. The same 5 gigabyte caps on the month to month service still apply however. _________________ BITF, PITM |

there is one trap to the month-to-month service.
upon initial activation of service you pay a $35 activation fee.
so long as you continue service at 59.99/mo you're fine.
stop the service because you don't need it for a while, and then restart the service...
and you'll be charged ANOTHER $35 activation fee. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

The customer service person I spoke to said that since I was a VIP Verizon customer (had phone service with them for a while) there would be no activation fee.
He also said that you could only leave it off for 4 months or you would have to go through a more complcated process to have it turned back on. |
