Back in December, we contacted Novatel to ask how they justified the "intelligent" part of the MiFi's description. Their answer was
Quote:
"...it has an onboard Linux processor capable of hosting software applications and additional content storage capabilities via MicroSD"

We conjured up dreams of iPhone app functionality, but without the phone and/or its useful touchscreen LCD interface.

At the CTIA trade show last April, we got to ask them more about that functionality since it was getting closer to launch.

We were told at that time, that the first versions of MiFi that come out in USA will NOT have that capability.

There is still hope that whatever next version of MiFi ships in the future, the app intelligence will be present. Its likely going to depend on carriers input/demands, as well.

Now that we've got our hands on production gear and fully checked out the web admin interface, we're positive that the MiFi is not any more 'intelligent' than the 3G cellular routers we've been selling.

It actually sounds "less intelligent" if it only supports 5 users - as Verizon claims.

If you save the config, lots of interesting things are in the XML stream...

<routeoverusb>0</routeoverusb>
<allowedclients>5</allowedclients>
the plaintext password

It does seem to honor the number of connections setting (but the dhcp display will only show 5, and the drops are not in a pattern, and the 7th active connection was assigned a duplicate IP knocking another one off, though when I set the DHCP range to 2-99 instead of 2-10, I got all 7 devices).

Short answer - yes you can change things, but longer answer is that it might be flaky if you do. There is always the paperclip hole. Internet reset protocol: cl/IP.
