Any word on what the latency improvement will be? I get about 200-400ms ping times currently. HSDPA will supposedly have 60ms avg latency. Hope Rev A competes with that.

I'm not buying the 60ms HSDPA claims. I've been in the wireless Cellular Data business for over 10 years, and latency is and always will be an issue for wireless. And to think that the carriers want bad latency to avoid VOIP is quite silly. Think about it - Verizon's push-to-talk service is VOIP, and they get plastered in the press constantly about the latency. Truth is, all the carriers are working towards VOIP as part of the CDMA roadmap. VOIP will save the carriers millions of dollars just on transport from the cell sites.

Then why are we not using VOIP yet on CDMA? Bottom line is QOS - the current infrastructure technology is not capable of delivering end-to-end QOS (Quality of Service).

Latency will always be a problem on a wireless link. If you had a layer 2/3 packet sniffer, you would see that your EVDO card makes so many corrections, retransmissions, and error recovery that it's amazing it works as fast as it does. Radio link-layer improvements have come a long way in my time, and I'm certain that mobile RF systems will never approach the latency of a piece of copper.

The latency exists as part of the radio layer. Place a call from a cell phone to another cell phone. Hold them up to each ear. Speak into one cell phone, you will notice a 1000ms delay to the other receiver. No one wants the delay, but we have to live with it. Sad

It sure would be very interesting to have every 4 months an EVDO Rev A vs 802.16e prototype "shoot out" as the technology evolves.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Technology Milestone Reinforces Acceleration Toward Next-Generation Wireless Capabilities

QUALCOMM to Continue Development Support for Faster Version of EV-DO High-Speed 3G Standard -

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today said that the recent successful end-to-end CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A test calls signal the acceleration of the market drive toward the Rev. A version of EV-DO. The calls were conducted using prototype equipment based on QUALCOMM's Cell Site Modem(TM) (CSM(TM)) CSM6800(TM) chipset for base stations and the Mobile Station Modem(TM) (MSM(TM)) MSM6800(TM) chipset for mobile handsets and mark a major milestone in the development of CDMA and the EV-DO Rev. A standard. EV-DO Rev. A supports peak data speeds of 3.1 Mbps on the forward link and 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link and the higher system capacity required for compelling next-generation wireless services.

"The evolution to EV-DO Rev. A is a significant milestone for CDMA technology that will allow Sprint Nextel to further our leadership in wireless data services," said Barry West, CTO of Sprint Nextel. "Besides increasing data speeds, it will facilitate real time applications that ride on top of the all IP wireless converged network. Applications such as voice over IP, high-performance push-to-talk, and higher-speed data access are just some of the examples of new services our customers will enjoy with the advent of EV-DO Rev. A."

"QUALCOMM is very pleased with these successful end-to-end test calls of EV-DO Rev. A technology," said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "The Company has committed significant development resources to the Rev. A effort, supporting our customers and partners as they offer new mobile capabilities and higher-quality wireless multimedia. Working with industry partners such as Sprint Nextel has enabled QUALCOMM to be part of these technology developments that we believe will redefine wireless mobility for people around the world."

The successful test calls using EV-DO Rev. A technology are a significant milestone in the development of the standard that enables new wireless capabilities on mobile handsets. In addition to providing peak data rates of up to 3.1 Mbps on the forward link and up to 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link, EV-DO Rev. A also provides lower latency with Quality of Service (QoS) to enhance the user experience for delay-sensitive applications such as VoIP and video telephony. Gold and Platinum Multicast services that are supported by EV-DO enable the delivery of high-quality multimedia content to a large number of users simultaneously. Industry-wide efforts are underway for further developments of CDMA technology that will enable even faster data rates and new mobile capabilities.

Rev A is still on target to pilot next year for both Sprint/Verizon last I heard. What's not clear is if it will be a firmware upgrade to current cards or if it requires a new radio. I've heard mixed messages but it seems it will require a new card/smartphone to get Rev A.

Anyone have a source of confirmation?

EVDO Rev A is a new chipset and will require a new device for faster speeds.

Also, the latency is much improved on EVDO Rev A, here is a picture I took demonstrating the latency:

Sub-100ms ping time is fantastic, but I'd bet that tower was very very close. Even so, the best I've seen Rev Zero do is about 150ms so this clearly a significant improvement. Gamers and VoIP users will be very pleased.

Looking forward to Rev('nitup) Aaaa.

Verizon Wireless Selects Lucent Technologies For CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Technology

Rev. A Enables Verizon Wireless to Provide a Range of New Services Including Voice over IP

BASKING RIDGE, NJ and MURRAY HILL, NJ — Verizon Wireless and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Lucent to deploy CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology into its nationwide network. Lucent's Rev. A solution, which consists of incremental hardware and software upgrades to Verizon Wireless' existing Lucent-supplied base stations, will enable Verizon Wireless to introduce a range of new services such as enhanced push-to-talk, messaging, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

With this agreement, Lucent will continue to be one of Verizon Wireless' primary next-generation network infrastructure suppliers. Financial details are not being disclosed.

"EV-DO Rev. A is a robust technology that will allow us to provide our customers with new services that blend voice, data, video and multimedia applications," said Ed Salas, vice president of network planning, Verizon Wireless. "Lucent has long been a key partner and has helped us provide our customers the most satisfying wireless experience possible. Going forward, we're going to count on Lucent as we roll out services, like Voice Over IP, that will help advance the way people communicate."

Verizon Wireless and Lucent completed the industry's first, live, over-the-air calls using EV-DO Rev. A technology in August 2005, and have since conducted live VoIP and video telephony calls using the EV-DO Rev. A Quality of Service (QoS) feature.

"Verizon Wireless and Lucent have been working together for years to deliver the most advanced mobile services to end users, and this agreement is another example of this continuing effort," said Lisa DeLaurentis, vice president of sales for Lucent Technologies. "Our EV-DO Rev. A solution will enable Verizon Wireless to cost-effectively upgrade its network to support new and exciting lifestyle- and productivity-enhancing services."

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A is an enhanced version of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO that increases the efficiency, data speeds and capacity of existing EV-DO networks. EV-DO Rev. A enables users to receive data (forward link) at speeds up to 3.1 Megabits per second (Mbps) and send data (reverse link) at speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. These increased forward and reverse link data speeds reduce data latency and will enable operators such as Verizon Wireless to deliver VoIP and other multimedia services.
