Sorry, I remember getting my FirmWare update after reading a message. For the life of me - I can't find it!

My USB720 started to disconnect and totally elminate itself from my PC. I had to unplug and re-plug for my PC to find it again. It also happens on my LapTop (so I know it is a modem hardware error). Fortunately, it does run for a while (hence this message)...Anyway, I just bought a replacement (new) off of EBay (don't want to extend my service) and want to update the Firmware before I start using it. I also remember updating my PRL (but can't find that darn link either). Hey, I have a lot of Senior Moments these days... Laughing

Anyway - any help on the links would be greatly appreciated.

operating the device with latest version of carrier's connection manager software, should automatically present you with option to update firmware -- or possibly just do it without asking you.

if its verizon, get latest software at http://vzam.net
if its sprint, get latest software at http://www.sprint.com/downloads

Thanks Alex. If it doesn't work - I'll give you a call and get another modem from ya. I am one of the original Verizon Wireless Customers (from Verizon) and didn't want to go into another contract with the 5GB limit.

Thanks!

For those of us who use a Cradlepoint Router (and thus don't use the carrier's connection manager software), do you recommend occasionally connecting the modem directly to a PC or laptop with the connection manager software just to check for firmware updates? How often? How long should one stay connected to detect if a firmware update is needed?

Thanks

vpnavy,
I "bricked" my VZW USB 720 by saying yes to the firmware update. It changed it from identifying itself as a Novatel Expedite (I posted earlier that it had been a Novatel OVATION, but that was incorrect) to a Novatel Merlin.
I also got one off eBay, but I now refuse the offer for the firmware update when it pops up.
If you go ahead with the update, please let us know.

BTW, does anyone know what the update is supposed to do?

generally speaking, we don't recommend a firmware update unless some kind os issue is present. (as is the OPs case)

at a minimum, you may want to occasionally update the PRL info, which you can now do via cradlepoint web admin (with latest firmware, and only for certain modems including all novatels)

Interesting. I was having the disconnect (no modem recognized) for the last four or five months. Prior to that I was having just normal "disconnects" (just hit CONNECT to reconnect) when doing having duty surfing (seemed like it would disconnect with large downloads like WindowsXP Upates, software updates, etc.). I did the Firmware Update - and the having duty surfing updates no longer disconnected. So, the Firmware did address that issue. Now, when it was updating - it made it very very clear that you had to get through the entire update with interruption or you would destroy (corupt) the modem. Fortunately, I didn't have any problems. However, based on your warning - I won't attempt the Firmware updates UNLESS I'm greeted with the disconnects when heavy surfing rasies its ugly head.

Thanks!

Does VZAM automatically update firmware, particularly when a used usb720 is provisioned as a replacement device on a different account? I have a used one, and it seems to have version 1.34 firmware. I know there are newer versions. Anyone know the latest? Would I be missing out on any good features if I just stick with the old version, and is that even possible if I use VZAM? What's the easiest way to update PRL on this device without permitting a firmware update?
