The 5GB allowance imposed by all the major national carriers is a hot topic for most mobile broadband users - no one wants to go over and get hit with overage charges, but some folks aren't sure how much data they use or how they can make sure they don't go over.

This week's tip offers some easy and effective ways you can make sure you stay under your limit!

Our customers often ask a really basic question that we realized we didn't have an article for... What's a cellular router for?

This week's tip answers that question at length!

If you use Windows XP or Vista and a Cradlepoint router, you may have run into a pesky little error message telling you that "The settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network". Luckily, there's an easy fix!

Did you know that your Cradlepoint router is not just the best choice for use with mobile broadband, its also a top-notch router for use with common cable, DSL or satellite internet connections?

It's true, and it's easy! By taking advantage of this functionality, you could set your router up to use your cable/DSL/satellite connection primarily and "fail-over" to mobile broadband if your hard-wired service goes down, or simply eliminate the need for two set-ups (one for mobile broadband, one for your hard-wired connection). Even if you don't have cable/DSL/satellite right now, the fact that your Cradlepoint router CAN be used as a router for those types of internet connections makes your router that much more of a wise investment in case you ever do have access to those options!

One of the biggest bummers about the MiFi is that if you tether it directly to a computer, it disables the WiFi. Luckily, there's a workaround!

How to Use WiFi AND Tether Your Verizon MiFi 2200 at the Same Time

This tip works great with the Verizon MiFi. Unfortunately, the tip doesn't work consistently with the Sprint version of the MiFi. You are welcome to try it - you can always revert back to the default settings - but in our tests it didn't work as well as the Verizon version Sad

UPDATE: 11/06/09 After this information was released, Novatel Wireless has corrected this in the configuration file and will no longer be configurable after a Verizon MiFi device has received it’s updates. According to our sources at Novatel Wireless, this oversight could become a potential safety issue in that when plugged into a USB port and running the modified configuration could cause damage to the computer it is operating on.

3GStore does not advise using this “hack” any longer for we will not be held responsible for bodily harm or any damage that may be caused to both your MiFi and computers.

If you purchase a new Verizon or Sprint phone or modem to replace an existing device and need to swap the service from your old device to your new one, you can do so online! You can always call your provider and request an ESN swap over the phone, but doing so online is quick and easy and ensures that no changes will accidentally be made to your contract or service by an overzealous rep.

PostPosted: Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:22 pm    Post subject: Tip #29: Locating Cell Towers Reply with quote

Since the inception of our Tip of the Week series back in April, we have been wanting to post a tip that would help users locate the cellular towers serving them. It's a question we hear often: "how do I find out where the tower is?" Many customers are surprised that there is NOT an easy answer to that question! There is no publicly available database, no magical mapping tool - it's not even as simple as asking the provider themselves. Unfortunately, while we would love to offer a simple solution, this Tip of the Week is to help you save time and frustration and explain why locating a cell tower is NOT an easy process...
