Now that most major carriers impose a 5GB allowance on data usage and charge per-megabyte overage fees if you use more than 5GB of data, it is very important to keep an eye on how much data you're using so that you're not surprised with a big bill at the end of the month! Luckily, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T make it very easy to monitor your usage so that you can make sure you don't accidentally go over your limit.

One of the biggest bummers about the MiFi is that if you tether it directly to a computer, it disables the WiFi. Luckily, there's a workaround!

This tip works great with the Verizon MiFi. Unfortunately, the tip doesn't work consistently with the Sprint version of the MiFi. You are welcome to try it - you can always revert back to the default settings - but in our tests it didn't work as well as the Verizon version Sad

The CBA250 is one of the lesser-known "specialty" Cradlepoint routers - it doesn't have WiFi but is great for certain applications. One situation where the CBA250 really shines is when users already have a wireless and/or ethernet network in place but just need a way to connect their mobile broadband card (USB or ExpressCard) - with the CBA250, you can simply connect your card to the CBA250, then connect the CBA250 to your existing "regular" router via Ethernet, and THAT'S IT! No configuration, no fancy settings to worry about!

If you use Windows XP and a Cradlepoint router, you may have run into a pesky little error message telling you that "Windows was unable to find the certificate to log you on the network". Luckily, there's an easy fix!

Cradlepoint routers have a lot of great features, but the features don't work with ALL modems. If you plan to use your Sprint or Verizon device with a Cradlepoint router, you'll want to check to see that it is BRAG(Bars, RSSI, Activation, GPS)-compatible.

If you've made any changes to your Cradlepoint (or Kyocera KR2) router settings - security, passwords, etc - it is HIGHLY recommended that you save a copy of your configuration file so that you can re-upload it back to the router if you ever have to restore your factory defaults or otherwise lose your settings. This can also be a big time-saver for folks or companies who need to set a large quantity of routers to all have the same settings - just save it once and upload it to all the routers!

Did you know that you can create a home network with your MiFi that will allow you to share files between the computers connected, remotely access other computers on the network, do network gaming, or share network printers - just like you would with a "regular" router?

You can, and it's easy! You'll just need to make a quick change to the MiFi's settings and then set up the computers that will be sharing the network, and you'll be all set. This week's tip will walk you through the setup for Mac OSX, Windows Vista, and Windows XP computers.
