|
|
While at this years CTIA show in Las Vegas, we circled the entire Kyocera booth looking for mobile broadband devices like their KR2 router and KPC680 EVDO Expresscard. Last year, the two devices were front and center and impossible to miss.
Since we did not find either anywhere on display, we went up and asked them why they were nowhere to be found.
The nice lady said (verbatim):
| Quote: | | Those are old products that we have no follow-on plans for |
Not sure about your interpretation, but that sounds to us like Kyocera is getting out of "mobile broadband" in the sense of dedicated devices and cellular routers, and putting their entire focus on handsets -- which were everywhere at their CTIA booth. |

| Even there KR2 firmware website now no longer has a place where you can tell them what modem's you would like to see supported by the KR2 in future firmware releases. I know it did a few day's ago. |

The KR2 is very similar to the MBR1000, "with the quote no follow up plans for the KR2" I would definitely look into getting the MBR1000 not only because of it's reliability but also because of the incredible support from cradlepoint.
Any customer can look at a company and see how many firmware upgrades have been release to support additional devices . I personally would go with the one that is supported the most
KR2: 3 firmware updates since release

Cradlepoint: 10 firmware updates since release

Exactly what Alex said is true!!!! I e-mailed Kyocera Support about any future firmware releases and this is exactly what their reply was:
"Unfortunately, the last firmware of the Kyocera KR2 Mobile Router is the ZE1004."
It's done as far as any firmware releases for good. |

| Any chance that the firmware is based on open source? If so, they gotta provide the source to the public....... |
