The staff at 3Gstore/EVDOinfo recently published this article:
Who has the best 3G coverage?
this thread will allow for discussion related to that article.

Wesley Brown from Alltel Corporate Communications wrote to us saying:
| Quote: | To the Editor of EDVOInfo.com,
I don't know who wrote the following article on EVDO coverage across the
U.S., http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/2711/63/ , but in the future, we
would appreciate if you would contact us or go to our Web site if you are
going to post information about Alltel's coverage.
Although I take issue with quite a bit of wrong information in your article,
the most obvious error is the statement that Verizon and Alltel don't have
roaming agreements with each other. That is obviously not true, and it makes
we wonder where you got this information.
If you are going to be a journalist or blogger, please make sure you what
you are writing is true.
Sincerely yours,
Wesley R. Brown |
to which i responded:
| Quote: | Wesley, thanks for your email. nice to know there are some folks at Alltel concerned enough about accuracy to contact us.
However, we do stand behind our statement that "Currently Alltel and Verizon don’t allow 3G EVDO roaming on each other’s networks"
Our information is based on YOUR customers telling us that Alltel and Verizon allow roaming at 1xRTT speeds -- NOT 3G/EVDO speeds.
If you can provide us a publicly accessible alltel.com URL that proves otherwise, we'll gladly update the article and attribute the source.
In the future, we'll certainly contact you as a reference, and hope that your answers aren't going to just be PR spin.
One last comment: if Alltel would put up a half-decent coverage utility on their site, you'd make lots of people happy.
The inability to see coverage with any true detail, continues to cause more questions than answers. |
which led Wesley to reply with:
| Quote: | It is kind of weird emailing someone who sits anonymously behind a computer telling me that "our customers" provide EVDOinfo.com with information. Believe me, I've heard that statement before and it is one that is highly unlikely.
If you wish to behave as a real journalist who puts a name on the articles they write, have real sources with real names, then I have no problem providing you with the information you requested. I won't provide information to someone is doesn't have the gall to put his name behind the information he writes.
And real articles are written from talking with real people, not from URL's and Web sites that may or may not be up to date. Apparently, you have bought into the belief that all media people only give "PR Spin" without ever speaking to me or anyone at Alltel.
All I was asking is that if you wish to write about Alltel, then just call me and put your name behind the erroneous information you write. You apparently are getting a thrill out of the fact that I would even contact you, but to respond with smug and crass comments is truly unprofessional and simply childish.
Sincerely yours,
Wesley R. Brown |
Doesn't look to me like Wesley was able to find any official verbiage on the Alltel site.

no, not yet. his reply did not even state that he believes alltel/verizon roam at evdo speeds... and we'd prefer not to have that information given to us just via phone call. we'd like an official URL.
i've started a thread in our alltel forum, asking alltel users to post their experiences. |

Thanks. Well, I read nothing controversial in the EVDOinfo article. Perhaps Mr. Brown can point out the issues he believes to be wrong. It was very clear to me you were speaking of EVDO coverage and not voice roaming agreements. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

The Alltel guy is way out of line. A minor quibble, but I might not have thrown in the part about spin because it was obvious his temperament wasn't suited to it, but everything you said was true and basically unaddressed by him.
He is probably accustomed to dealing with print media types that write puff pieces or generic stories about their service or news they make in the business world (e.g., "Alltel releases its quartely numbers" type stuff.) The internet is a different world and the information is specific and often technical. He's probably not equipped to address this.
Alltel has a decent network and coverage within the regions it operates, but they don't to the "little things" that could make them respectable. For example:
No real, comprehensive coverage maps
Poor selection of 3G modem styles and models
No support for their products in enterprise networking products (Cisco, Sonicwall)
No static IP option
I'm beginning to feel like the Verizon buyout can only be a good thing because it's obvious Verizon knows how to run a respectable 3G network in all phases. |

While he certainly has the right to take issue with what was written, (not that I thought it was inflammatory) it would have been nice if he would have addressed the issues.
As far as the "real people" comment, and *especially* in light of all the astroturf special interests out there, HERE on this forum is where I find "real people" with their real world situations & issues. I'm 100% certain that Alltel (or any other big corporation with a decent marketing budget) can quickly assemble a posse of "real people" who will gush and wax endlessly about the quality of service & coverage.
Do they or don't they? The answer is still hangin out there.
Mr. Brown should stop taking offense and just put the info out there. Who knows, it might just translate into additional revenue. |

Perhaps Mr Brown should join this forum and speak directly with some "reap people". Mr. Brown - can you hear me now? ( ) _________________ WVBill |
