OK, about two bars at the Willard on Pennsylvania Ave. It was EVDO but only tested at 115kb down or so but usage was not bad, just about twice dialup but fairly consistent. Never tried the 'burbs.

Western DC suburb in Northern VA... Dulles Town Center, Sterling VA...

4 bars of signal (sorry, didn't check RSSI when I had it plugged into my Windows laptop), but running a speed test on my Powerbook (which consistently speed tests faster than Windows), I got 675k down, ~100k up. It peaked at times up to 715-720kbit/sec.

Well... I just blew that previous speed test from Sterling away at work in Herndon... My office building is right across Rt. 28 from the Dulles Airport tank farm (which is now obscured at street level by the new sound wall), and from my interior office, I've clocked over 1Mbit/sec! I first realized it when downloading a rather large file, then followed it up with a speed test to formalize the result.

When running on my Windows laptop, it has showed two bars in the past, though that's a couple weeks ago. While I don't think that would've changed, it's certainly possible.

It is very sweet when you hit that above 1mb download speed.

I once got 1926K download, on a brand new tower, the day it went live (happened to be near my house), more info here:

It said Broadband Access but it acted like National.

A friend is in the data wasteland of zip 20616 & gets poor VZW coverage, at least at ground level. (HEAVY tree cover...) Looking at ToddTroutman's antenna brings up hope, however.

But is all VZ EVDO at 850 Mhz?

What % of the DC VZ cellsites have EVDO?

Don't know what percentage of sites have EVDO, but it looks like reliable (meaning solid in all directions, except maybe a low spot here or there) EVDO coverage stretches about 20 miles from DC proper.

Beyond that 20 miles, here are the corridors that appear to have good coverage:
- I-95 North is well-covered up to Baltimore, then sparingly covered beyond as you continue to go North.
- I-95 South looks well-covered up to about Fredericksburg
- I-270 is covered, sparingly at spots, up to Frederick
- Rt. 7 in VA looks like it's covered as far west as the Loudoun-Clarke County line, though coverage beyond Leesburg looks a little spotty at points
- Rt. 267 is well-covered from end-to-end (Leesburg to I-66)
- Rt. 50 in MD is covered up to the Bay
- Rt. 50 in VA looks like it's covered as far west as Aldie

BTW, your friend 's zip code appears to be within EVDO coverage, so a booster antenna might help him get a better signal...

I've been using Verizon BroadbandAccess for over a month now in my apartment in Arlington, VA. Since yesterday, I've noticed that while I connect at BroadbandAccess every time, shortly thereafter it switches down to NationalAccess and stays there.

Anyone else in the DC area seeing similar issues?

There appears to be some confusion while the new pricing is taking effect. The morning after I re-upped, I had been removed from broadband access and only had national! It took a couple of phone calls to straighten it out.

Check to make sure your service level hasn't been altered in the system somehow.

I haven't reupped at the lower $60 yet and, as I said, I do connect with Broadbandaccess. Looks like the hopping down to NationalAccess has stopped for know <knock on wood>, I think.
