XV6700 for Verizon by Audiovox

Just got the VX6700 last week, and I must say that its a nice device.

The point you make about passwords is valid, I admit, typing on any mobile device is just not that great, however I will say that the keyboard on this this is pretty good. Take a little getting used to but I can actually type decently on this thing now. I find myself sliding open the keyboard to type in urls and passwords most of the time now.

As far as using it as modem, there is a great little Windows app, PDANet from junefabrics.com that takes care of that issue, works great, however, my use mouse will get a little weird with the modem when its first hooked up, nothing bad, just unplug in replug the fob and it works fine.

Actually, the nice thing about this for now is that Verizon isn't charging me a tethering charge of $15/month since they don't officially support tethering on the 6700, so I'm only paying $45 for my data service. Probably a loophole that will get closed sometime.

I guess as a Mac guy you'll need to find another tethering solution, but it does work great with PDANet. Most of the time, the speed is good enough with EVDO that surfing and even audio streaming work almost as well as my wired cable modem. Still on average about 10 slower than cable, but still very useable for surfing and audio streaming.

7 Macs, yes you're a Mac guy, which is cool, I've always wanted one but then there was some other gadget that comes along, like the Ultra Mobile PC. That's the reason I got the VX6700. Maybe finally maybe finally a decent portable web browsing solution. PDA web browsing is really hit and miss depending on the site.

As far as Mac's build quality, I used to agree with that, and at low end retail that's still true, but the base hardware is all the same now, where does Apple differentiate itself? Some integration aspects of Macs are cool. But Windows has it neat apps and integration. Tablet PC's are very slick (and yes I had a Newton, but it wasn't a full blown computer) and Windows Media Center is neat as well. Before the iPod exploded I was syncing my PDA with my recorded TV shows, so the video iPod is a little late for me. Of course I could just copy the file to a laptop. Haven't really looked at Apple's home theater stuff in a while, if it has cable card technology for HD tuners I'm there.

PDANet doesn't make me miss calls, but it does slow down my connection when I recieve an incoming call. If ignore the call, then the data connection speeds back up. Of course, can't talk and use the phone, but right now I'm only paying $45/month for my data connection and don't pay the 15$/month tethering charge since Verizon doesn't officially support tethering on the VX6700. Sure, its not as nice as having a phone and a data card but the average person will want the data connection for the quick web browsing chore on the PDA more so than a slower than WiFi connection to a laptop unless they really are super mobile.

My Verizon I730 does not allow me to force roam if I want to which is very important to me. My friend's Sprint 6700 does allow him to force roam and he then gets 4 bars inside our work building when I get sometimes nothing. Does the Verizon 6700 allow you to force roam?

Hi all, I have been reading these boards for a number of months now and have been helped quite a bit without ever having to post but I now have a question.

I have had a KPC650 for quite some time now and have loved it but I am now looking at getting a 6700 but I need to be able to tether to my laptop when needed.

So what are the chances of actually getting a Verizon CSR to put me on the full $59.99 access plan so I can tether my laptop without worry? Also is there some special department I need to talk to when I call?

We have had to call, call, and call again or ask to be transferred to a higher-level department to allocate BroadbandAccess to a plan in some instances. For a phone that Verizon lists as 'supported' for tethering, in fact.

I would expect there to be even more initial resistance to a phone that isn't listed as supported for tethering, even if you've figured out how to get it to work ("sir/ma'am... that phone is NOT supported and there is NO way to add BroadbandAccess to your account plan...").
