Does EVDO Work on Calls/Texts?

Our Verizon cell phone network just got EVDO today. I have a basic question. It seems to work fine for internet access, but when making regular calls/texts the EVDO symbol goes away, and the calls/texts don't seem to use EVDO. Is this how it is supposed to work? Verizon has provided no info to us for this change.

Text and voice uses 1xRTT.

Also looks like EVDO works when sending pics/files from the phone to a PC. Is that right?

yes, it uses data plan for sending pics,mms, files to another phone or pc through the network
