Hello. I have a U720 from Sprint and am looking for help. I have my desktop pc running the modem on a 24 hour basis. What I need is to add wifi or something in order for my laptop to connect to the internet too from the family room.
The high end, super expensive routers are out of the question since I am broke (lost my job)
I am running Windows Vista on my desktop with the evdo modem installed on it and my laptop is running Windows 7. What would be a super cost effective way of setting up wifi or sharing my evdo connection to my laptop from my desktop pc? |

Which router would you recommend?
Something with Wireless built in?
When I connect my router, should I use the internet plug or the other plugs?
A little lost when it comes to EVDO modems, they arent nearly as easy as routers and roadrunner :/ |

If you can find an access point instead of a router, you'll reduce some of the possible complexity/problems that you might run into.
I use the ICS method with windows XP.
Aircard is installed in the desktop PC. The ethernet card in the PC is connected to a small 4 port switch (so that I can connect other wired devices if necessary).
The access point is plugged into the switch and provides wifi access for the laptop that I'm typing this on right now.

Cradlepoint EVDO routers are simple pug'n'play, as easy as a cable modem router. Cheapest one is the CTR350. Or, like I said, pick up a cheap wireless router from WalMart or second-hand and use that with ICS _________________ evdo-tips.com |

cellular routers like these http://3gstore.com/cradlepoint
are designed from the ground up to efficiently and easily share the cellular connectivity.
repeating an earlier post about how ics sucks because nobody supports it, and nobody supports it because:
| Quote: | ICS is nearly impossible to support because so many variables can affect results: operating system on server cpu and client cpus; mismatch between client and server network adapters (wired and worse for wireless); the wide variety of non-cellular routers that could be used; and lastly but most important -- lack of support for this kind of solution from a) computer maker, b) operating system maker, c) network adapter maker, d) router maker.
if you want to experience the world of finger-pointing tech support, ICS is the way to go.
(note: serious sarcasm in that last comment) |
