I am sure that this subject has come up before but i have had three different UM150's and Now I am going to need another as this one is breaking contact in the swivel base. Drops the connection and says that device not inserted. Wiggle the connector and maybe tap it, or throw it off the wall makes it come back to life. I have it on the cord and i an still having this issue with all 3 that I have had. They last about 4-6 months. Another issue is the 150 is getting hot...Real hot!!! I maybe doing email and this thing is cooking. Does the UN175 do the swivel like the 150??? And the heat..This isn't normal..its every bit as warm as the laptop transformer for power. And I have had it hot enough to not really want to hold it. So next week I will go to town and while there I can replace the darn thing...Again! Is this a UM issue?? Will it do the same thing??

I've had similar problems using the UM150 in a Cradlepoint router. Since I'm using a router, I don't know if our problems are caused by the same thing, or if the same workaround will work for both, but I'll post it here anyway.

Apparently Alltel modems have a problem of going to sleep after even relatively short periods of inactivity, and the Cradlepoint routers can't always wake them up. The workaround when using a router is to try to prevent it from going to sleep. So, in the router configuration pages you go to Advanced-> Failover/Load Balance. One of the items is "ETHERNET WAN FAILURE DETECTION". Make sure "Enable Ping on Idle:" is checked, and for "Ping Target:" put the IP address of a known web site (e.g., 64.233.161.104 is google.com).

That seemed to greatly help me. I'm not sure if there's a problem with waking up Alltel modems when they're directly connected to a laptop. I doubt there would be, but let's suppose there is. You should be able to find a program out there that will constantly ping a web site. Or, you could get a program that will try to synchronize your computer's clock with the atomic clock every 60 seconds.

BTW, my UM150 gets pretty hot too. It's not too hot to touch, but it's certainly very warm.

Had the same issues and Verizon replaced it with a 727. No more problems!
