|
|
I am using a Pantech UM175 modem with a Craddle Point MBR Router. With the modem connected directly to my laptop I am getting about 900-1000 kbs download. When I connect it to the router the Download speed goes to about 400-500 kbs. Does anyone know why this happens and what I may do to improve it? My computer is in the same room as the router.
Thanks for any ideas.

It is the MBR 1000 router. Sorry I left the # off.

| Is the modem in the same exact location when it is in the router as opposed to directly in the laptop when running the speed tests? A foot can have a drastic difference in speed. Try running a usb extension cable and make sure the modem is in the same place when you put it in your router as it was when you ran the speed test and got good results directly from your laptop. |

Thanks for the reply. Yes the modem is the same cause I am using an extension cable with an omni antenna. So when I put the modem directly in the laptop I am using the exact cable with antenna.
Anyone have an idea? Is there some setting in the router I can make?

The first change to try is go into the router settings and change the channel. If it is on auto channel select, change that to enable manual selection. Try different numbers. You may be having interference from nearby networks or devices near your router (phones, fridge, microwave etc,) _________________ evdo-tips.com |

OK I tried making the changes above disabling spi and traffic shaping. It made it much worse. My download speed went down from 500 kbs to less than 200. Now I am really confused. Anyone have any ideas?
I haven't tried changing the channel as suggested cause I can't seep to figure out exactly how to do it. Thanks in advance for any help.

To change the channel, log into your router, select the "Basic" tab and then "Wireless (WiFi)" at the bottom. On the screen that shows deselect everything except "Enable Wireless Radio". Then in the "Wireless Channel" drop-down box select a channel to use. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

Thanks Jim. I was looking for it under the Advance tab. I'll try to change it when I get home tonight and see if there is any improvement. Not sure why those other changes didn't help.
Again thanks.

Who is your cell service with using the UM175 modem? Are you testing your speed with you computer wired from the MBR 1000 router to the computer Ethernet cable? What is the MHz of your cell provider? Where are you? How many cell providers in your area are running on the same MHz? for example a have three cell providers in my area running on 850 MHz; US-cellar, Alltel, and AT&T – however AT&T is also running on 1900 MHz through Bug & Tussel which seems to provide the interference for everyone. _________________ alhanson |

I am using Verizon. I am testing my speed two ways. One with the modem connected directly to the computer, and the other with the modem in the router and connecting wirelessly.
I have no idea what MHz the tower is using. I live way out in the country on the central coast of california. Verizon is the only signal you can receive at my place. The tower is about 6 miles from the house with a large hill blocking the line of site.
I am using an Omni antenna on the roof and getting an RSSI of around -80 when using the antenna. Otherwise I barely get a signal.
Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

i'm going to change it to the router settings for now, but can anyone here offer why 2 different settings (machine-to-router) can still communicate? is there the overhead of "you say ch 6, but i think you mean ch 8; so let me transfer you" for each packet?

| MBR 1000 uses wireless N backward compatible to Wireless G. Wireless N is faster than Wirless G and when you are using your modem direct into the computer you bypass the wireless factor. Possibly you are having a problem with your wireless port on your computer or you have a wireless G. You may want to try a plug-in USB wireless N adaptor and disable the built-in adaptor. |

My Mac Book Air is wirless N and seems to work just fine on my other wireless connections.
Thanks for the reply. |
