Verizon EVDO Mobile BroadBand service can use either the 850Mhz or 1900Mhz band, and finding out which is in use for your connection can be tricky.

Thankfully, EVDOforum contributor Jim_in_VA has made it easier to figure out with information on his blog:

Knowing which band Verizon uses on your tower is necessary before buying a high gain directional single band antenna.

Just remember that, even if Verizon is using one or the other band in your area, doesn't mean they always will. An investment in a single band directional antenna may come back to bite you if Verizon changes/updates towers in your area.
