I had over 20GB last mo. Downloaded OpenSolaris 10, Win 7 64, then switched laptops and EVDO cards. After the ESN switch, the sprint website sez I'm still on the old contract, whew ! The 2 years was reached mid 2008. I guess I'm clear from any overage charges for the time being Wink

I'm here in Silicon Valley. The Sprint website sez WiMax will be avail in this area in 2010 so I'll get that whenever it's ready. I read it will be unlimited too in the beginning at least

But you know, 6 mos ago I went to an ATCA conference and the carrier guys said the internet backbone is over saturated. They didn't anticipate the load that customers would be demanding. There's not enough blue fiber out there yet to handle the load. Not enough capacity for everyone. The said that's why LTE in the US is coming out at very slow at 10Mbps to 30Mbps when it can run 100Mbps, and that's what's holding up Cellular 4G (not the same 4G as the hijacked "4G" in WiMax/Sprint/802.16/etc.) which runs at 1Gbps.

I think Google bought up a bunch of dark fiber years ago. I wonder it the capacity is constrained because they don't want to pay Google for it. At the very high monthly sub costs today, I can't imagine they don't have enough revenue to invest.

The conf I was at had telecomm eq mfgs. Google is not a telecomm equipment mfg. I don't work on FO systems so this may not be 100% correct, but here goes... Fiber today is infrared. The telcos told me infrared fiber is saturated now and they can't keep up with the growth, not even with DWDM systems jamming data thru. They have no more room to grow the internet backbone. They are waiting for the telecomm eq mfgs to deliver blue laser (400-500nm) fiber optic transmission technology. It does not exist yet. Plus new blue fiber that can transmit 400-500nm wavelength has yet to be laid worldwide. When it comes, capacity will jump 100 times.
