|
|
This thread will contain updated information about the compatibility of the Sprint Palm Pre and 3G routers, including the Cradlepoint MBR1000, CTR500, CTR350, and PHS300.
We are very excited about this phone - it has a touch screen AND a full slide-out QWERTY keypad, and is Rev-A and tether-capable! We are VERY hopeful that Cradlepoint will support the Pre as it has great potential to be a near-perfect tethering device. Stay tuned!

Someone having a release date would be even better I'm still torn between waiting for the pre and going w/ the HTC Touch Pro but hopefully and idea of a release date will pop up soon. |

I guess mine is the first report on this topic: So far, the Palm Pre doesn't work on the Cradlepoint CTR350. Sprint (of course as widely reported and as fact) does not allow the Palm Pre to work out of the box as a tethered modem.
There are numerous rooting solutions being explored for WebOS that have been discussed on some forums, but WebOS Internals has been discouraged by Palm to address tethering for the Pre. There is, one available application, MyTether, that works very well for USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and it even provides an ad hoc WiFi network with DHCP and WEP. (For some reason though, the WiFi speed of the Pre shows up as 802.11b 11Mbps rather than as 802.11g 54Mbps which is what Palm specifications say the Pre's WiFi speed is supposed to be. I determined that it was 11b by scanning with the free programs, Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector and Metageek inSSIDer.)
The fact that MyTether already provides a WiFi networking solution might negate the need for a 3G router, but I can see further advantages to using the Pre with a router; for example, higher security levels (WPA2) and more network control. Cradlepoint replied to an inquiry, "Unfortunately even with the Mytether.net help, we still will not be able to support the Palm Pre at this time. When and if palm comes out with the option to tether the phone directly, we will support it."
I tried the Palm Pre with CTR350, and these are the results I've had so far with the phone connected to the router in the "Just charge" mode:
- With Pre standard software:
CTR350 Modem Info tab: Blank
Status WAN tab: No Interface currently active
- With MyTether On (both with DCHP enabled and disabled):
Same results as stock Pre
- With USBnet On and MyTether Disabled (USBnet enabling is a feature
of MyTether):
CTR350 Modem Info tab:
Mfr: Palm, Inc.
Product: Pre
ESN/IMEI: xxxxxxxxx (actual replaced here)
P Port: USB1
Connection Status: offline
Status WAN tab:
Connection Type: PPP
Traffic Shaping: Active
Network Status: Establishing (please wait . . . )
After about 30-45 seconds, Network Status changes to Disconnected
and screens read the same as for stock Pre.
Perhaps helpful in evaluating this test and the potential for the CTR350 to support the Palm Pre through some patch or application is another test I performed of the Sprint Palm Treo 700P, which is not listed by Cradlepoint as supported (the Verizon 700P is listed as supported). The stock Sprint 700P plugged into the CTR350 produces the same negative results as the stock Pre. But with Mobile Stream's USB Modem Enabled, there is full PPP connection and operation of the CRT350, and the Internet is at hand through the router. Hopefully some WebOS developers will look into this and come up with a patch that implements the USB Modem technique. |
