|

I've been out of the phone market for a long while.
First question, when using a supported Cradlepoint phone and connecting it to the router do you have to have the PAM add on or will it just be using the regular vision data that is supposedly still truly "unlimited?"
I currently have two Sprint Data u720 modems, both of which I've had for 2or3+ years. I use one for my home connection and traveling while my wife uses the other when she travels. I was going to cancel one over a year ago but was offered both for $39.99 each so I decided to keep both. Both plans are still listed as unlimited and I regularly use 7-12 gb one one card without problems but the other rarely gets used except for light surfing and use less than 2gb per month. I've had the plan long enough that I don't get charged for going over. Will an upgrade likely kill my good deal of virtually ignoring the 5gb limit but being watchful of not using 20+ gb per month? I won't pay for going over period.
I want to upgrade one card to a phone/pda that I will use for surfing, emails, gps navigation, light texting and as a note taking device. I'll rarely use it as a phone since I have a work cell w/ no extras even texting but it seems like daily I'll be out and wish I had a net connection to look up something quick and it's too much of a pain in the butt to pack a laptop all the time lol.

You must have the PAM feature turned on for tethering to work, either in the computer or router. Unfortunately, that means that the 5GB limit WILL apply.

If you upgrade your modem to get a discount on the new modem, this will re-set your 2-yr contract and you WILL then be subject to the limit and overage charges. If you want to upgrade the modem but NOT renew the contract, you would have to purchase a new card outright (much more expensive) and do a simple ESN swap (just swap the service from the old modem to the new modem).

Sprint have several phones with these capabilities. Remember that for tethering, not all phones are Rev-A capable - if you plan to use the device for tethering often, you will want to select a Rev-A phone so that you're getting the best speeds possible when you tether. One good option is the Palm Treo 800w. If you don't need too many minutes, you could do the 450 minute 'Everything' plan, which also includes text messaging, for $69.99/mo. Tethering is then $15/mo additional and you can add and remove that feature (by calling Sprint) as needed. |

There are ways around the 5GB limit and the PAM plan as long as you have unlimited Power Vision (Employee Discount), SimplyEverything). Maureen's comments are however, very accurate and good advice. _________________ evdo-tips.com |

To add to the accuracy of this thread:
There are plenty of software packages that will get you around the need for PAM, the extra cost, and the limits.
If your phone includes unlimited data, then you are standing in high cotton. Take a look at:

I have been really pleased, and it works in so many ways (including with cradelpoint routers).
