PostPosted: Wed Nov 02, 2005 4:58 pm    Post subject: Problems with intergrating VZManager, wi-fi and Semantic

I have a HP Pavilion zd7380 running Win XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP2. On-board is a Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g.

I am using a 650 pc-card and use VZManger to control the 650 and my wi-fi.

I am using Semantic for Internet security and virus control.

The problem that I'm having is that once a wi-fi connection is made, I get an an error that ccProxy.exe attempted to reference memory it shouldn't have. ccProxy is Semantics Network Proxy service and I can confirm that the service stops after this error. Once I get this error, I can no longer use IE or MSN Messanger, however yahoo works fine along with other networking services. I'm able to get back running again by disabling Semantic Internet Security AND re-starting the Symantic Network Proxy service (even though I have disabled it).

Once it begins working again, IE periodically thinks I am offline and asks if I want to connect. When I click no or cancel, most of the time it retrieves the page anyway.

I did uninstall the VZManager and tried to get back to my original configuration, however VZManager has done something to my IE since it thinks I'm never online, even though I have network connnectivity and can ping the world.

Anybody experience similiar issues with VZManager? Should I use VZManager to manage both my 650 and wi-fi access? Any idea why I'm now having problems with Semantic Network Proxy since installing VZManager?

Sorry, but I'm getting frustrated and about ready to send this crap back before my trail is over.

PS: I'm having the exact problem on two separate HP laptops running same OS and card, but different models. Both are running semantic. Both use 650 cards. I purchased the cards off EVDOForums!!

Thanks for any help offered.

Kevin,

Sorry that there are problems. After talking with you on the phone and have all the versions that you are running, we will call Verizon Tech Support to see if there are any work-arounds with all the versions that you are running and we will talk on Thursday.

Micheal,

I really appreciate you looking into this. Very Happy

I manually ran LiveUpdate and it updated the application. It was setup to run automatic, but for some reason it just did the subscription stuff.

Anyway, I continue to have the same issue, however I believe I am on the same version as you.

I hope to find out some info from Verizon later this afternoon or by tomorrow. For those reading this thread OR for those that purchase from us, to help with problems, we one of the many tips includes this:

If you are running Windows, PLEASE read this before installing:

So, hopefully, this tip will help someone else too!

How about not using VZmanager? I am using the card inserted into a desktop and sharing the connection. I just tell the dial up connection in XP to dial #777

That was something I was going to have them try, but apparently, just the fact of installing VZAccess on the computer (even with it not running), was causing the problems - very strange.

I have a possible solution for this symptom.

My Problem Description:
I was having frequent (multiple times/day) error messages that said some program (it varied) was illegally trying to access some memory location (it varied, but was most often very low in the address range, something like 00000117). This symptom occurred whether or not I was using my Verizon BroadbandAccess service (I normally use DSL at home).

My work-around:
I found that if I left the error message dialog on the screen without selecting "OK" (I learned to drag the dialog to the bottom of the screen, out of the way), I could continue with what I was working on. My network & internet access remained functional and no other problem occurred. However, if I clicked on "OK" to close the dialog, I would immediately lose my network and/or internet connection.

Debugging effort:
After much time spent trying to determine the modules & programs that made the illegal calls (pretty tricky process since it involved errors by Windows OS dll's), I became suspicious of the compression service that is installed by Verizon. If I remember correctly, the service is called, Venturi Access. It certainly has the "Venturi" brand name. It installs an icon in the Windows system tray (on the task bar) that shows, among other things, an image of a car and some reference to faster internet traffic when you open it. It starts at OS boot & is always running, whether or not BroadbandAccess is being used.

Solution:
Bottom Line: I uninstalled the Venturi software 2 days ago & the problem has not appeared since. Before uninstalling the Venturi software, the symptom appeared multiple times per day.

Result:
So, I'm running happily now, albeit without whatever benefit that the Venturi software provided. Boy, is it nice to have a stable running system. I was seriously considering wiping my system & reinstalling from scratch. This problem seriously affected my computing life for the month or so that I was struggling with it. I'm pretty appalled at Verizon about this.

I hope this is helpful to you.

PostPosted: Sat Nov 05, 2005 4:22 pm    Post subject: I also avoid use of VZManager

By the way, I also simply tell the card to dial when I want to connect. As I recall, some problem occurred when I went back & forth between use of my BroadbandAccess & my DSL service. I attributed the problem to heavy-handed behavior on the part of the VZManager software. I haven't had a similar problem since that time.

Sorry for the lack of response on my side but I've been extremely busy.

I had long since disabled Venturi, although it was not uninstalled. My current work-around is to disable the Semantic Internet Security immediately after bootup. I will get the error once, but after I disable I won't get the error anymore. I also must re-start the Semantic Network Proxy service, since it stopped due to the error and without it I can't get Explorer or Firefox to work. All other networking services are unaffected.

Although I don't get the error messages anymore once I disable the Internet Security, I do frequently have trouble with IE thinking I don't have a network connection. Sometimes I can click "OK" to dial, which of course it won't, and IE continues to function. Other times I must restart IE or even reboot.

For those who ask why I'm using VZManager to manage my WiFi, well I didn't have a choice. Even though I told VZManager to not recognize my WiFi, it did things to IE so that IE would failed to recognize my WiFi until I re-ran the wizard to recognize my card. When it comes to VZManager, your damned it you do and damned it you don't.

My next attempt may be to uninstall VZManager and just insert the 650 and see if enough drivers loaded for me to connect using the 650 without VZManager.

Michael, any word back from Verizon???

FYI, tech support at Verizon have been useless.

Your model is not listed as one that has problems.

Many are running Symantec for security without problems. I have a Sony Vaio (PCG-6G4L) with a KPC650 and Symantec Security and I am not having any problems with IE or MSN.

I am wondering if you have any Virus protection software that was running while you initially ran the first time setup/install of VZAccess?

I see the following:

- Something prevented the full install
- Re-install and do NOT have VZAccess manage your WiFi card - there is something strange going on with your WiFi Card, so I would NOT let VZAccess manage it
- Perhaps there is some incompatibility with HP Pavilion zd7380 and the KPC650 (although, there are no reported failures with any HP Pavilions on our forum)

So, what are the options?

- We can extend your 15 day trial period (which is up tomorrow) for another 15 days, to buy more time to figure it out
- We can send you a Novatel V620 to try to see if works any better
- If you are fed up and don't have time, you can cancel and return

Take this private via email and let me know how you want to proceed.

For anyone about to install any EVDO card (Verizon or Sprint) on their Windows computer, it would be a great idea to set a System Restore Point before doing the install - that will make it simple to revert.
