Don't ever upgrade your account with a promo card.
Buy a card on Ebay and change equipment without changing your plan...

How does one do that (change equipment)?

On the back of the PC5750, there is a number (all digits, no letters) of this format:
xxxxxxxxxx
underneath is a bar code.
then another number:
yyyyyyyy
Then another bar code.
then another number:
zzzzzzzzzz
then another bar code.

The help message in VZ Manager says the ESN is:
xxx-xxxxxxxx (yyyyyyyy)

Exactly what should I use?

BTW, I bought the card on eBay. Is that going to cause a problem?

It was the top number.

Did an ESN swap via phone with a very nice Verizon tech support guy. Took 2 minutes.

A very pleasant surprise...
