|
|
| Quote: | 3G currently has a three-year time to market advantage over mobile WiMax and will likely reinforce its lead with the emergence of new 3G technologies, a new study says.
The coming year will be pivotal in terms of deployment of new and improved wireless broadband technologies but 3G cellular data service will dominate over the next few years, according to a market study by Northern Sky Research. |
FYI, for those that do not know EVDO = BroadbandAccess = Mobile Broadband = 3G

| I wonder if 3G dominates over just the next few years, and the current carriers of EV-DO will need to start rolling out Rev A to be competive with emerging WiMax coupled with their customers needing to purchase new equipment to take advantage of it; will they really see a great return in their current 3G investment? |

EVDO Rev.A will be rolled out by the major carriers who have DO deployed already nationwide. Rather than being directly competitive to WiMax, it will support advanced services beyond Voice and High-Speed Data. For the return on investment in 3G to be successful, the service models that are being offered to customers should be competitive and generate significant revenuew. I suspect that majority of revenues in Wireless still come from Voice only and unless Data/Multimedia adoption grows rapidly, 3G may not be successful for delivering Multimedia.
In the next 2-3 years when WiMax issues have been ironed out, there will be a competitive landscape between EVDO Rev. A with MultiCarrier solutions and WiMax competing for identical/competitive service models. I'd assume WiMax to complement EVDO in hot spot areas and also where DSL/Cable solutions may not service broadband multimedia in the last mile homes. _________________ Kodaypak |
