|

I have been using a WRT54G3G-ST for about two years now. We have never been able to get the full rate service from Sprint where we are, but it was better than a dial-up and we cannot get DSL or Cable here, so the air cards are the only practical option.
We used to have Sprint for our cell phones but have switched over to Verizon and found we get better coverage.
In the past week two things happened, my Sprint PCMCIA air card broke off when my laptop fell of the car seat (no damage to the Dell), and I discovered my Sprint service contract is past 2 years, so I can get a free card from either Sprint or Verizon with new service.
I only today discovered that Linksys also makes a -VN version of this router. They claim that my -st version cannot be flashed to turn it into a -vn (which kind of surprises me, hard to see what hardware difference there would be. Probably the phone companies insist on it).
1) Should I buy a new Card from Sprint and keep the existing router? The router is working okay, cost of service is about the same, but Verizon might have better data rate where we are.
2) Should I get a -VN version of this router and a Verizon card and sell the -ST router on ebay?
3) Is there a better air-card router option?
The USB style from Sprint WRT54G3GV2-ST would also be an option, but Verizon does not seem to offer that router. Actually I gather from some postings that Verizon is not very helpful about running an aircard in a router like this. Sprint has not been a problem. I actually bought the router from Sprint so they supported it fine. I've really never had a problem with it. We even used two different air cards in it (my wife's and mine, a Novatel and a Sierra). Once in a while we have to reset the thing to get online, but generally we don't think about it much, it just works.
$48 per month with a corp discount.
