| There are MANY EVDO-capable phones available, and some folks assume that since Sprint and Verizon have upgraded their towers to support Rev-A, that anything labeled "EVDO" will be getting those Rev-A speeds. That is not the case. Devices must have chipsets specifically manufactured/configured to support Rev-A in order to take advantage of those speeds - so even though your Blackberry Curve 8330 is EVDO-capable and you are in an area covered by Rev-A, your Curve is not going to give you Rev-A speeds. |

|
|
Thanks Maureen for the helpful info.
I noticed that most Sprint phones that are Rev A capable listed in the forum for tethering are smartphones. But there are other, non-smartphones that can do this. Sprint has emailed me the list (below) of phones capable of tethering. Some are Rev A non- smartphones, such as the Sanyo Pro-700. I hope this is helpful.
What I am looking for, is to tether a Rev A non-smartphone to the Cradlepoint PHS300. Does anyone have experience in this? Conceptually, is this possible?
BTW, I think the info re: cost and limits the Sprint person who sent the email below IS INCORRECT. But the tether - list IS CORRECT.
thanks, Dan

I'd also like to find a Rev.A non-smartphone, but in my case for Verizon. I think Verizon calls EV-DO non-smartphones "V-Cast" phones. I did some searching here and on Verizon's site (using Google), but came up empty. Anyone know of one? If not, I might have to settle for a Rev.0 non-smartphone.

Thanks, that's very helpful. It's still a nightmare trying to figure out if Verizon considers any of those Rev.A phones to be non-smartphones (non-PDAs), but I'm working on it by cross-referencing with Verizon's site. Please LMK if there might be an easier way...
EDIT: I'm slowly piecing the puzzle together. Any phone or non-Blackberry PDA first released by Verizon before Nov. 14, 2008 can be activated without a mandatory $29.99/mo data plan, but PDAs released after that would need one. So, even if none of the non-PDAs were rev. A, I wonder if any of the non-Blackberry PDAs that are Rev.A were released before Nov. 2008? Fortunately, I do see some non-PDA phones that are rev.A on that list (e.g., Casio, LG, Motorola, Nokia). They seem to be the only ones that list "V CAST Videos" under features. Some PDAs list "V CAST Music", so just searching for "V CAST" doesn't separate the PDAs from the non-PDAs. I just have to add, the amount of mis-information spewed out by some Verizon call center reps is simply astounding. |
