First, thanks to the site owners. I followed their instructions, which didn't help solve my problem, but helped me stay focused on not giving up.

I am typing this from a new laptop, running a new installation of Windows 7 64 bit connected to Sprint Broadband on the Pantech PX-500.

It seems to have helped to install the Sprint Connection Manager rather than the Smart Services first. I struggled for a while to get W7 to recognize the PX-500 and sometimes it ignored it entirely (no flashing light, nothing.) At that point I went to Device Manager and did the hardware troubleshooting which looks up drivers and installs everything it can find. I also updated all of my drivers from HP for Vista64, and all that messing about did it. It works perfectly.

Once I got it connected and ran the firmware update, I installed Smart Services and am running that now.

I have tried sooo many times to get the PX-500 to work in Win7 build 7600 and it just wont work....I tried running in XP compatability, Vista compatability and it seems like the driver never installs correctly. The light flashes amber on the PX but when I open SmartView or Sprint Mobile Broadband it does not recognize the card. I also tried setting up a new connection via win7 by adding a 'dial up' and still nothing, here I get error 692. This is really driving me nuts, I am tempted to go out and buy a 2200 mifi and not deal with this anymore...anyone have any other suggestions? The 2200 is $300 so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mario

Figured it out for the pantech devices.. Basicly you need to download the latest version of smartview.. And then get a program like 7zip.. Then all you got to do is right click the installer and extact it to a directory.. From there you then go to device manager and update the pantech usb modem, pointing it at the directory you extracted.. From there it will install the one device and then made three new unknown devices appear.. Repeat for the same devices... This should work for other devices too, milage will vary.. But here is a screen of it finished. (Now I am gunna go off and see if this works on server 08 r2. )

Enjoy!

Server 08 r2 works as well with this method.
