|
|
There is a topic on Venturi Compression at EVDOinfo.com and I wanted to post some comments that have been left and start a thread on others experiences.
Using the Proxies (via Venturi), can give you a false sense of speed (see EVDO Benchmarks), however, some people have reported crashing and other issues.
Here are the posts that I have received, if anyone has anything good or bad to say about Venturi Compression, post it here!
-----------------------------
FYI...
the TNS Listener part (lsnrctl.exe) would crash when Venturi was on. If you tried to sqlplus or get into your database using the syntax of sqlplus user/pass@sid, it would bring up a Dr. Watson saying tnslsnr.exe has encountered a problem, blah blah blah. i googled it and it turned out to be venturi.
-----------------------------
Though Cerulean Studios has tried to resolve it, Venturi does cause crashes of the Trillian messenger periodically. If you disable network transparency, it doesn't crash but you don't get the benefits of the Venturi software. To install or remove transparency, go to the SPI folder under your Venturi2 install. (Normally C:\Program Files\Venturi2\SPI) This would likely resolve the Oracle problem as well.

I found that it slowed down things far more often than it helped. I've disabled it. _________________ Scott Wilson

although i admit, ive only had my EVDO going for just a day, i do know that on verizon, venturi is enabled by default for the lower speed range. without the install software that comes with the service, do i need to worry about it? even when driving i seem to allways be in 3G.
i guess i could take a trip south and see how it goes in national access. have that about 30 miles from here.
would the uninstller work for a Mac, tiger 10.4.1 ?
it took so much to get this working (verizons fault) i hate to do anything to screw up such a good thing |

|

I just received my KPC 650 this morning. I installed VZAccess and Venturi. It literally took minutes to bring up pages. I drove up to the local cell tower and even with four bars showing it was taking obnoxious amounts of time to load Google. After disabling Venturi everything worked like a charm. Drove over to the next cell and speed was not great but it is a high rise business area at 3 pm.
P.S. I am writting this on my desktop computer which is networked to my wireless connected laptop. _________________ Bill |

| Google Desktop Search reports Venturi as incompatible. That alone meant exorcizing Venturi to me...I've got gobs of data I have to search often enough. |

Yes, I've had pages take up to a minute to come up with Venturi, but to some extent it does work. The fact that this page reports well over twice the download speed:
http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp
when Venturi is installed ,and when I download any application from the net it takes about half the time. It doesn't just feel faster, it's not my imagination; it downloads screamingly fast, so hats off to the Venturi designers in that department of functionality. I must give Venturi the credit here.
The problem is that when you click on a link Venturi seems to be asleep, its little icon tornado sputters a few times and who knows what its doing for a long while before you finally see the web page come up.
But as far as downloading large files Venturi is very functional IMHO. Venturi for loading web pages is a whole nother can of worms.
But yes, for now I have uninstalled Venturi completely. _________________ Sony T250 1.2 Ghz & 17" Powerbook 1.5 Ghz |

that Mcafee site is bogus. i tried it and it says im at 2 Mbps +
while at the same time my laptop says max speed is 40 kBps or about 320 kbps... whats the deal here? are they measuring unsustained burst speeds?
i tried it about 5 times and got the same result every time |

I agree with the consensus above. Just installed the Kyocera 650. Got incredible alleged speed using bandwidth tests, but the browser ran like a dog. Read this thread and disabled Venturi. Alleged speed now supposedly much reduced but browser runs like a greyhound .... Thanks to the posters here for your advice!
