Toronto, ON & Montreal, QC, October 31, 2005: Bell Canada today unveiled Bell Mobility's new mobile data network, EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized), which it deems the “fastest mobile data network ever commercialized.” The technology is the third generation (3G) of wireless networks, and delivers data at download rates of up to 2.4Mbps, which Bell says is more than five times faster than anything else in Canada.

"The future of wireless is here today: EV-DO will fuel the next phase of wireless growth and provide Canadians with highly advanced next generation services not previously available," said Robert Odendaal, President of Bell Mobility and BDI. "With Bell's new network, we are changing the way Canadians use their wireless devices for work or play. Customers can only get this from Bell."

The fast data transmission speeds of EV-DO allow for streaming video, high-speed surfing, and 1MB file downloads in 20 seconds or less, with an average speed that varies between 400kbps - 700kbps.

"Bell's EV-DO network re-defines business on the go by connecting the handset with the power and capability of broadband," added Jim Jaques, Senior Vice President, Business Marketing & Sales, Bell Mobility. "The productivity gains from this new 3G network are significant. From file downloads to video-conferencing, the busy mobile executive now has constant real-time access to the people and information they need, no matter where they are."

Bell EV-DO will be available in Toronto and Montreal immediately, with plans to roll out across Canada beginning next year. Bell Mobility has concluded an agreement with its U.S. roaming partner to extend EV-DO coverage for Bell Mobility customers into the United States.

In tandem with today's announcement, Bell launched the first three EV-DO-compatible hardware devices: Kyocera Passport, a next-generation EV-DO PC card for wireless broadband on the go; BlackBerry 7130e; and the Samsung a920 handset.

Operating on Bell’s EV-DO network, Samsung’s a920 is a portable multimedia device featuring a built-in MP3 player, megapixel camera, video recorder functionality, Bluetooth wireless technology, and built-in and expandable memory to store and share files like music, video, and photo.

"Samsung is thrilled to work with Bell to bring CDMA technology to the next level in Canada," enthused Jo Allan, Marketing Manager, Wireless Terminals Division, Samsung Electronics Canada. "The Samsung a920 phone, coupled with Bell's EV-DO service, will provide Bell Mobility consumers with incredible data transfer speed, further enhancing the multimedia services such as music, camera and video capabilities of the phone."

According to Bell, the EV-DO service paired with the a920 will allow users to instantly share digital photos and video clips via an “always-on” high-speed connection. Additionally, the a920's built-in and expandable memory will allow Bell Mobility customers to quickly download, store and listen to music using the phone's MP3 capabilities.

The BlackBerry 7130e business, EV-DO phone features a new “candy bar” handset design with raised keys, and it provides wireless access to complete phone, wireless e-mail and data features. Developed by Research In Motion (RIM), it offers average download speeds of 400 to 700 kbps, making it easy to download large attachments, view jpegs, browse Web pages and take advantage of other feature-rich data applications, says RIM. The SureType keyboard technology allows users to dial phone numbers and type

messages without the limitations of traditional phone keypads. The device will also support wireless tethering on the 1xEV-DO network, providing broadband-like connectivity for laptop users.

Additional features include: large, high-resolution LCD screen with enhanced indoor and outdoor viewing; dedicated Send and End phone keys and an intuitive user interface; speakerphone; dual-band network support for nationwide roaming; 64 MB of flash memory; 8 MB SRAM for storage of data and applications; and Bluetooth support for hands-free voice communications.

"Mobile professionals on the go are really going to appreciate how the BlackBerry 7130e delivers more ways to stay in touch with work and home; not only with the unbeatable data speeds available in EV-DO coverage areas, but with the sleek new design that is compact, lightweight and very professional looking," said Christopher Shannon, General Manager, Hardware, Logistics and Supply, Bell Canada. "This next-generation BlackBerry device is sure to prove popular with Bell Mobility customers who demand the best in innovative communication technology."

The BlackBerry 7130e will be available to Bell Mobility customers before the end of 2005.
