Sprint has launched the new Ovation U760 by Novatel. The U760 is a new small USB EVDO mobile broadband modem.

Check out our Sprint U760 "First Impressions" Review

Ovation U760 Features include:

- Support for Windows Vista/XP/2000 and Mac OS X 10.4.11+ (doesn't fit in MacBook Air - but does work with included cable)
- NO CD needed to install
- GPS Support
- MicroSD Slot
- Antenna Port (yes, we have antenna adapters, so all booster, omni, RV, magnetic mount, yagis, work with it - see U760 antenna options )
- Sprint Smartview Support

CradlePoint already supports the U760 in the latest MBR1000 and CTR500 firmware.

We already have these in stock for the Ovation U760 launch.

The U760 will sell for $99.99, PLUS there is a Sprint $50 Mail-in Rebate (so net cost is $49.99). If you already have a Sprint account and want to upgrade, the price is $299.99.

Get your U760 with 2yr contract from the EVDO Experts at http://3gstore.com/sprint

Has anyone used this device yet ?
I have been reluctant to upgrade my old Merlin S 620 because it works so well and there were problems with the S 720 working with the KR1 router I use.
Does anyone know if the U 760 works with the KR1 ? I have had absolutely no problems with the KR1 and hate to dump it just to get a Rev A card.

Thanks for a reply. Fred

i use the Sprint U760 daily. even wrote our U760 Review

no, the U760 is not supported by KR1 and never will be.
the KR1 will never be updated to support any new modems.
kyocera has made the KR1 an obsolete modem, in favor of KR2, but anyone who has option to use http://3gstore.com/MBR1000 should get that instead of the KR2

The U760 is plaguing me with frequent shut-offs and disconnects. I've been through the routine with Victor from tech support (uninstall, deleted usb ports, clean registry entries of novatel, and re-booting a dozen times) and I am presently running the U760 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version.
I've uninstalled every trace of the old CM and re-installed with the newest version, and for now I can at least connect.
It shouldn't be this hard to get a device that works as advertised. I should have just bought a router and kept the old S720 in service. I paid full price for this POS and I'm past my 30 days.
Don't spend a nickel on this modem, it's not working nearly as well as the old S720.
Michael needs to help us relate the quality control issues and form a consensus as to why this device behaves this way. I understand every computer is different, but c'mon, these things aren't all that complicated a device. They need to connect and hold a connection if they have enough signal to do so. Fringe area users should expect this but I'm seeing this happen when SNR is less than 60. I'm not the only one seeing this issue and I don't want to belong to this particular club...we're not happy.
That's it, my rant is done....

My U760 also has issues with turning itself off periodically. Last night, it would stay on only for 30 seconds or so at a time. Unplug from USB, re-plug and it'd come back, but only for a short bit. Also was very hot.

I called Sprint (I'd bought it from them). Their support person said he'd just received an email that U760 devices are having this issue, sounds like a major defect affecting the model or at least a lot of them. Sprint doesn't have a resolution plan yet.

So it looks like a bunch of us got U760's and now have defective modems. It'll be interesting to see what Novatel, Sprint and resellers decide to do about this. Interestingly, Sprint's customer service told me I should call Novatel. Novatel's web site is clear that they expect resellers to intercede between customers and them.

Lovely state of affairs...

I should note, for clarity, that this isn't a driver issue and it's not specific to a given computer. I use the U760 with a MacBook and with a PHS350 router.

When I say the modem powers down, I'm not kidding. All lights go out, and the device stops responding on the USB port. Pulling the modem and re-inserting brings the lights back on, until the next time they go off.

Sure looks like a protection circuit is purposely disconnecting power. So either a defective protection circuit, or a defective circuit that the protection circuit is detecting, perhaps. Either way, it's now useless for its primary function.

Novatel USB760 customers of 3Gstore:

All of the information gathered here will be presented to Novatel Wireless. I will personally see to it that Novatel replaces customers devices that are showing signs of defects and request that you email or call in to 3Gstore Support to notify us of such. All modems have a 1 Year warranty from defect.

I have received a call as stated from USER: bbrucato and will be contacting him shortly once I have had the opportunity to adress this with Novatel Wireless.

Any others that feel their modem has failed in the ways that are described in this thread and who have purchased their modem from 3GStore.com, should send e-mail to support at 3gstore.com

Hi Victor.

I am on verizon, not sprint.

I am using a U760 modem on a cradlepoint350.

Works great, now. Albeit quite slow.

But I am already on a replacement modem.

I had the same sorts of problems others are listing. The modem seemed to work, (Well, until it just plain didn't work anymore.), but was constantly turning off, losing connection etc.

I suspect novatel has bid these out the lowest bidder, to be manufactured, and then has been sloppy on it's quality control.

Nothing wrong with using the lowest bidder. But they do need to get some better quality control measures going.

According to sources at Novatel Wireless...

The issues that were mentioned here with regards to the Novatel Wireless USB 760 from Sprint as well as other Novatel Wireless manufactured devices should no longer be effected at this time.

It was targeted this morning that it was an authentication server that Sprint went and enabled as of recent that was causing all of the commotion.

It is said that Sprint has now shut down the services to these servers and will NOT be turning them back on untill they have rectified what is causing the issue in Novatel devices.

I have the utmost confidence that Sprint Engineers will be working on this technical glitch in the coming weeks, and they will have it resolved prior to flipping the switches back on to the authentication servers.

Luka,

I will see what they have to say about Verizon Devices and how this comment could effect a Verizon device that is ran by other towers/servers...

I will keep you posted

I want to thank Victor for the call regarding my issues as well as express my hope that this will be the answer to my problem with this modem. I was pleasantly surprised and made confident that plenty of cages were being rattled.
I will be putting the modem back online and will post any further issues (or non-issues for that matter) in the near future.
I can't thank the folks at 3G enough. Victor went out of his way to help me and I feel as though I have the ear of the right guy to settle this issue.
Wow, imagine that, real customer service, it's nice to see.

In testing yesterday, I found the U760 had little trouble when signals were strong, but shut down when there were weaker signals. Based on the temperature of the device, I'd guess when they go to high power, there's a thermal shutdown occurring.

Sprint had me go to a Sprint store to get a replacement, and claimed they'd made an appointment for me, and that they'd talked to the people at the store. I got to the store, and there were 4 people on line, one person (sales, not technical) in the place, and he didn't know anything about any appointments.

I left, and called Sprint again. Got some guy who seemed to be a fixer, lit fires under a few folks and they're sending me out a replacement U760. Whether the replacement fails too, we will see.

The PHS300 proved to be a wonderful, useful way to run my tests, as I had it set up in the car, with my iPhone attached to it over Wifi and had an Internet radio station streaming. That kept the U760 busy as I drove to the Sprint store for the ill-fated trip mentioned above.

Next time I need a modem, though, I'll call 3Gstore for it. I've had great results with the routers and antenna gear from you, and I'm really impressed by the actions you took and promises made in this thread.

Well Victor, you'd better think about calling your friends at Sprint and Novatel. I'm sitting dockside in New Haven, Ct. and have been experiencing frequent shutdowns and disconnects. I haven't been swinging at anchor nor have I been suffering extreme weather conditions. The unit (U760) is not overheating.
I've got another couple of weeks at work before I can do anything more than pull and reinsert this modem as necessary. I'm really disappointed that this issue has reappeared.
I have noticed the Phoenix drivers appear repeatedly in the task manager and shutting them down and restarting the CM gets things going again, at least for as long as it decides to last.
I'm looking to do something about this in a couple of weeks, just a heads up.
