I am using a U760 in Canada on Bell Mobility.

I also experienced frequent disconnects and shutdowns until I discovered that it was the user interface program tscui.exe that was disconnecting the U760 when my WiFi was enabled.

Solution A was to disable the WiFi on my laptop and then everything was great.

Solution B was to not use tscui.exe (block it at Windows startup in the 2 places it starts and reboot) and to just connect directly using the Network Connections dialog. I have never had a disconnect since I did this.

Solution B had the added advantage of allowing ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which the tscui.exe program was blocking.

tscui seems to have different names on different providers, but is common to the Novatel products.

I am not using the U760 for Wi-Fi, it is my primary internet connection through Sprint. It doesn't matter that I'm in Connecticut or New Jersey. The unit disconnects for no discernible reason, no rhyme or reason. It requires me to pull and re-insert the device to make it re-connect.
Very frustrating.

The question is not whether you are using it for Wi-Fi, but do you have a WiFi adapter or network adapter enabled on your computer?

My disconnects occurred when the WiFi was enabled and stopped when I disabled it, even though the WiFi was not connected to any router at the time.

YMMV, but it is worth a try.

When I have wi-fi enabled, the aircard is not in use. Wi-fi is disabled when card in use.
I'll try enabling but not connecting wi-fi and see if there's a change in behavior. It wouldn't make any sense for the wi-fi adapter to affect the aircard if it's not enabled, but hey stranger things happen.

Another observation on the U760 or USB760 device.

I have noticed that it doesn't like unpowered USB hubs. On a hub I have that is usually reliable, it suffers from disconnects. So for me it goes back into the notebook USB jack, where it is very happy.

My guess is that it requires a lot of power and therefore some USB ports and hubs might not deliver as much power or as clean power as is needed by the device.

Just adding to the list of options for those suffering from random disconnects. Try a different USB port. Try removing all other USB devices. Try a powered USB hub.

So after posting earlier this year about the U760 failures, and being told by Sprint that ALL of the U760s are or will be experiencing this failure, they sent me a replacement unit (yes, still a U760) and promised they were working on a plan for how to address customers' issues.

The replacement U760 worked OK for a while, but is experiencing the same issues of shutting itself down as the original one. When using the modem directly on my MacBook, the software pops up a message that no modem device is connected, and indeed all lights are off. Pull the modem, plug it back in and it works. Lovely. Similar results with the Cradlepoint.

Whatever Novatel thought was wrong with some network servers might really have been a problem, but wasn't THE problem with the U760s.

Any arm-twisting that can be done with the vendor(s) would be appreciated.

U760 working well for me so far. Too early to tell though.

Bell Canada/WinXP 32bit no other wireless adaptors or drivers. Unit does get quite warm, but not hot by any means (Mind you this is Canada - where it is far below 20 celsius most of the year and room temperature is usually under 19C.)

Not too happy about the pricing compared to the US, but hey - can't have everything I guess.
