Long time Lurker...

Same thing here in rural east TN. My usb720 worked great for 14mths, then last week we had 60 mph winds and ever since my connection has been jumping b/t Rev-A, Global and National and my speed is down from 600 to b/t 50 & 150 (when it actually can connect.)

After several conversations w/ tech support and a DMU reset they escalated the ticket. Last night (less than 24hrs later) they call me and tell me that it's just a "Marginal Coverage Area"... REALLY!!! It worked fine for 14 mths and NOW it's a "marginal area" with no plans for change. NO WAY they had the time to actually investigate as to WHY it just started after a storm with 60mph winds.

If anything else worked up here (on top of the mtn.) besides satellite I would switch. Got a Yagi on order. Hopefully won't have to spend $240 for an amp.

wow--that is exactly the same situation I am in, right down to the part where they said you are in a "marginal coverage area".

Like you, I think my only solution now is to risk some money on an antenna and hope it will increase my signal to the REV-A tower enough so it will stop switching to global.

It is still odd that it only switches to global access in HDR only mode. When in regular mode it switches to national access.

Also, AllTell has never offered service in my area as far as I know (perhaps even in the entire state of Maine), but I could be mistaken.

"Marginal Coverage Area" must be their standard response when they don't know or don't plan to do anything about it.

I received the Wilson 301111 late Friday. Have had bad weather so I'm waiting to get on the roof. This morning, I finally got tired of waiting, so I put the yagi on a piece of 3/4" pvc pipe and put it close to my Cradlepoint-350 w/the usb720 (inside the house.) Hooked it up & aimed it toward the closest tower (have line of sight to two towers, one at 8.5miles and one at 9miles away.) Looked at the Cradlepoint Device screen... WOW... what a difference. It went from 32% & -93db to 65% & -77db. Did speedtest with 2wire_com and speedtest_net and got almost 300k. (Granted 300k isn't much but it's better than the 50 to 150 National I was getting, when it actually did connect.) Pulled the usb720 from the Cradlepoint and plugged it into my laptop... Yep, now I'm getting a constant Rev-A connection. Not bad for $53 (ebay) & being inside. Can't wait 'till I can get the thing up on my tower. (Will have to dig out my lmr-400 b/c it will be about 40feet total.) Maybe I can get back up to my original 500-600k. For now I'm just really happy that it has worked this well thus far.

I just started experiencing this problem tonight with VZAccess Manager switching to "VZAccess - Global Access". It appears that I'm getting the same speeds, so I'm not sure what the issue is here. I just hope I'm not going to get billed for roaming or international charges because the card evidently thinks that it's on the wrong profile? I'm not sure.

One interesting thing is, which I think I read from someone else posting in this thread, that I too installed a zBoost within the last couple of days to improve my AT&T signal. When I started using my Verizon card, it would give full signal on NationalAccess instead of BroadbandAccess, so I forced HDR lock in order to get back my 2 or 3 bars of BroadbandAccess signal, and now I have this problem. Speeds are fine, so that's no big deal. I just don't understand how it got switched to this.

Yep...that's the same thing I'm experiencing. If it makes you feel any better, I haven't had any roaming charges on my first 3 bills as a result of being connected to global access.

Sometimes, when it switches to global, my speeds are the same. Other times when it switches, I lose all bars and have a signal strength of 0 RSSI. When this happens, I can't do anything. It only requires a disconnect, shutdown, and restart of access manager and then it will connect to BroadbandAccess REV-A again. Not bad, but very annoying when you have to do this over and over again.

Another thing that is odd about my situation, is that sometimes it will connect to "broadbandAccess", without the REV-A. I don't think there are any REV-0 towers in my area, so I don't think it is that. Who knows.

And I think AJVP is right when he says "marginal coverage area" is just an excuse for doing nothing or having no idea what to do. When they told me that, I said, "well, on your website I am in a full broadband access area, with no borders of coverage anywhere near me." That didn't seem to register with the person as she just kept repeating the same thing.

The one thing that she did, which caused me to switch to global access a little bit less often, was something she called "adding another authentication to the tower and your card". Who knows what that means...

Thanks for the responses so far!

Spoke too soon!!! Signal was really good then 2 days ago the bottom dropped out. No signal what so ever.
Called Verizon. Opened a new ticket. called me back w/i 12 hrs and said "The techs looked and said that it is a Marginal Coverage Area. Yes we know that there are coverage problems in your area but we are NOT going to do anything about it at this time. You can cancel w/o a early termination fee."
So today I decided to go ahead and put the Yagi on the roof. Got full bars with RSSI of -64. It bounced to Broadband REV-A once but mainly stays with NationalAccess (about 135k.) I'm guessing that they either lowered the power (if that's even possible) or made it directional (instead of omnidirection) or they rotated the tower head so that I'm more b/t 2 of the 3 faces than I was before. Reguardless... I'm screwed.

sidebar: Now, each time I see one of those Verizon (largest coverage area, we're behind you) commercials... I just have to laugh.

I think I'll try to find my old Sierra 860 and give AT&T a quick try (at least I already have the Yagi up.) Rolling Eyes

Same reply I get from them, I'm in a "marginal coverage area" so that cannot help me. Even though my signal is usable most of the time then drops to unusable for a couple of days at a time.

Well, after having the trouble ticket open for 5 weeks with no communication from verizon, I finally called them. They told me that the ticket was closed and the problem was a result of me being in a "marginal coverage area" (nevermind that according to their coverage map, I am in the middle of a HUGE REVA area). They couldn't explain why it was switching to global access and the tech said "I've never heard of that before." You would think they would do a little more research and have a little more information for me after having a ticket open for 5 WEEKS!!!

Turns out I am only 2 miles from the tower too.

Anyhow, when I persisted, the tech said that she "added another authentication to the tower" and to my card. It actually seems to be better now. It still switches to global, but not as much. Keep in mind it only switches to global access on HDR only mode. When it is on automatic mode, it switches to nationalaccess.

Well, to sum my side up, the problem is exactly described as the rest of everyone has described it.

It for me was the software screwing up on my computer..

I unistalled VZAccess manager, did a search and made sure any file relating to verizon was deleted.

I then re-installed a new version from the website, re-activated my card and WA-LA no more global access thing. My dad had the same problem the day he got verizon and same technique fixed it.

Just out of curiosity, what Operating system are you running?

I am running WinXP Pro.

I have tried that same thing, but I will try it again if it has worked for you.

Thanks!

Same here . Happened about 2 weeks ago. Kept being disconnected. Had it in HDR mode. Ran awesome for about 14 months and then bam. National Access. Called twice and they said they have a trouble ticket open on it.

Well, I finally got a concrete answer to my problem!

Basically, Verizon told me that there is a power fluctuation issue with the tower nearest me. This is why my REV A signal will drop from -85 to -117 for several minutes at a time, causing me to switch to National Access. When it was switching to national, I was then using the HDR lock. The lock would work fine until the tower lost power. Since I was on HDR only mode and the tower lost power, there was no where for my card to connect to, so the software says it is on VZ global access, which is actually nothing because my card is not global access capable. This is why I either cannot download anything or the card simply powers off--because there is nothing for it to connect to, since I have it on HDR lock.

THey told me that they are aware of the "power fluctuation" issue in the REVA tower near me, but that it can only be fixed by building another tower (which I don't buy) and that there are no plans to address the issue until mid-2010.

I guess I'm screwed!

Got the Wilson 301111 up outside and it worked pretty well but not on the closest towers. Found another tower 12 miles away and my speed was about 200-300. I finally broke down and bought a wilson amp. It didn't do any good with aiming at the towers closest to me though. So I aimed at the one 12 miles away and BOOM. With the Wilson 30111 and the Wilson amp I'm getting speeds b/t 800 and 900 from 12 miles. I can live with that. Very Happy
